WARNING! SOME RETAIL BOX WDC 80 GB "SPECIAL EDITION" ARE STANDARD MODELS!

This is to let anyone who is buying the Retail Box Western Digital 80 GB "Special Edition" know there is a possible problem. This is supposed to be a WDC 80 GB, 8 MB, 7200 RPM, "Special Edition". The model number on the outside says "WD800JBRTL". I purchased this drive at Fry's Electronics in Southern California. This is the link at Outpost.COM (Fry's WebSite). When I opened the box, the label on the drive says model "WD800BB-00CAA1". Although the outside label claims the drive has a 8 MB cache, it actually has a 2 MB cache! :| I called Western Digital and they confirmed this via the serial number. If you have already installed your drive, you can usually see the model number on the boot up screen. If your system does not display this, you can see the model number in your Windows Device Manager. I called a tech department manager at another Fry's and he told me they are aware of the problem. He spoke to a manager at a third Fry's, Manhattan Beach, and that manager opened about 15 boxes. All were "BB" models, not "JB" models. If you purchased your WDC 80 GB "Special Edition" in Southern California, I suggest you check your drive.

You sure don't here people complaining when its the other way around. (eg. a 100gb drive in an 80gb box)

I have (2) of these drive's so what's the Correct Model # I have WD800JB-00CRA1 is that correct. (*JB) not *BB

What do you want them to do, not complain and keep the drive that is inferior to the one that they purchased?

99.99999% of the people here could not tell the perofrmance difference apart, I hope you realize that the 8mb cache drives are a gimick to help sell hard drives.

Yes, you have the correct model. It's supposed to be "JB", not "BB". Western Digital told me they would call me within 48 hours. If they don't, I'll just exchange the drive.

What does that have to do with people getting less than they paid for? Also, tests show that it is faster, maybe not for things you do but other people may need the bursts of speed.

Just checked my drives from Circuit City and they are in fact the JB model ... No free upgrade to 100Gb for me, but no free downgrade either 🙂

BentValve,

I don't think its a matter of whether or not you can tell the difference or not, the thing is people paid money for a drive which on the front of the box claims 8MB Cache. If the box doesn't contain the 8MB Cache version then the consumer has a right to get the proper product. I don't think anyone here has screamed bloody murder at Western Digital yet. They made an honest mistake. This would not put me off from buying another Western Digital drive in the future at all ... But if I was one of the people who bought an 8MB SE and got a 2MB regular edition I would most definitely be complaining. The most important fact that you must remember is that the 2MB Cache models only carry a *1* Year Limited Warranty and 8MB SEs carry a 3 year warranty! And even though the box says 8MB SE ... I'm sure WD would question you trying to receive a new drive in 2 years (if it crashed) when you send them a 2MB drive instead of the 8MB SE version.

And just because 99.99999% of people can't tell the difference (and this is a pretty wide generalization on your part) doesn't make it right. If you were a stock broker, and you took 1 penny from every transaction that you made, you could collect millions ... And 99.99999% of people probably wouldn't know the difference. Intel could probably sell you a 2.26Ghz Pentium 4 and label it a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4 and you probably wouldn't know the difference either. Does that make it right? Of course not! I'm sure if the shoe were on the other foot you would feel differently about this situation.

I see your point and your correct , I happen to appreciate WDs customer service and I am mad because there is always somebody trying to screw them over...basically WD is already laying off
alot of people .

No, you can tell the difference. This is particularly true if you use PartitionMagic which I do all the time. Certain operations in PartitionMagic appear to exclusively use the drive's onboard cache, not your main memory. If you have a partition, especially one over 2 GB's, and you want to move it to another part of the same drive, PM seems to only use the onboard cache. I can tell you the difference between my ATA100, 7200 RPM, 2 MB cache Maxtor and my "Special Edition" WDC 120 GB was very noticeable. 😎

The (3)Year warranty is the KEY* and if your a Video Editor or such there should be a noticeabale diffrence!😉

I've never personally dealt with Western Digital Customer Service, but I would think that this is something they (or the retailers selling their drives) would gladly correct since it is a mistake on WD's part. But this notice is definitely important so we can be aware of the problem and double check our drives, especially since there's been so many hot deals for 80GB WD SE drives lately. 🙂

Mine pretty much ALWAYS break inside of 3 years, not because they are poor drives but because I use my PC 24/7 and and constantly write and erase to it , I really value that warranty.

Before buying my WDC "Special Edition" 120 GB, I called Maxtor about their 120 GB, 8 MB drive. The cost was the same. They dropped their 3 year warranty to 1 year. So, yes, you're right. The warranty period is important. That's why I decided to buy a WDC instead. 😀

My Maxtor 80GB ATA133 8MB cache Drives have come with 3 YEAR warranty ....It's right on the box and these drive's are less than a month old to the Public.🙂

You must have lucked out or bought the Enterprise Edition drive. They changed the warranty period to 1 year. This is the PDF datasheet for retail kits. Notice how the spec box on page 2 says "Standard Warranty 1 year 1 year 1 year 1 year"? Besides, this has been known to the web for a month anyway. This is the 7200 RPM Ultra Series Kit Maxtor Spec page. Notice how you must download the PDF to find the new warranty period.
