Not sure if this is the right place to post but since so many deals here are pionters to Dell here it is...

I purchased a 40GB drive from Dell in Jan of this year from their "Software & Peripherals" web page. Since the drive was specified as "for Dell Dimension" and I installed it into a non-Dell computer there is no warranty. "Dell" parts have no warranty unless they are installed into a dell system "with a current Dell warranty".

Now that sucks because (obviously) my drive is FUBAR.

Happy shopping.
BTW Dell service sucks

EDIT:
I guess the reseller rating of 5.23 should have told me something.

EDIT 2:
Western Digital sold the drive to Dell as OEM (already tried them and they said no)
There is a difference between "OEM" and true OEM parts. "OEM" parts are just brown box parts with manufature warranty. I figured it was a true OEM part but thought Dell would still stand behind it... guess not

I too bought a 40GB HD from Dell at the end of last year; Dell parts but not for a Dell puter. I got an IBM. I'm pretty sure IBM still backs it with a 3 year warranty as a standard OEM part. Even without a receipt it is obviously only a year old; they can tell by the model number. Check with the manufacturer of your drive.

Maybe the HD manufacturer will cover u? I had a compaq system and the HD died I called seagate and they said they drive had a 1 year OEM warenty because it went to a computer manufacturer.

IBM warrants their drives for 3 years whether OEM or Retail. Years ago they did not cover OEM. This information is about a year old, so it could be possible that they no longer warrant OEM.

I beg to differ. I had a Dell XPST500 that had a broken motherboard and they replaced it for free.

Of course they did. They are suppose to do that... it's called warranty. I've also had parts replace on a Dell laptop but the service still takes forever to get through to.

IBM doesn't support their OEM drives anymore. At least not their Gateway ones. You have to go to Gateway for support.

That's why you wanted to go for something like the Seagate drive b/c they will cover you regardless of which system you install their drive in :)

If you pay with a credit card, call your card company. They probably have some kind of extended warranty program.

i bought an oem quantum 20GB from gateway about 2 years ago before they merged with maxtor. anyways it died and gateway shafted me for the exact same reason as your situation. quantum refused to honor the warranty for an oem part and insisted i had to deal with gateway. well i thought i was screwed but i ended up tricking quantum into issuing an RMA by giving them a different serial number that was on the drive (just changed one digit). i figured either

a. quantum would check the serial and realize i made a "mistake" and figure it would be too much trouble and just repair it anyways.

or

b. they wouldn't even check the drive at all

in any case, one of those events happened and i got a brand new drive.

good luck

probably depends on the product manufacturer if they want to repair it or not

Add Seagate to the list of drive manufacturers who won't do warranty work on Dell OEM drives.

Two things to point out here...

1) The drives are cheaper because they have no express waranty...

2) The manufacturers love them because someone else foots the bill for failures (if you get the Dell warranty)...

Well I guess if nothing else everyone that reads will be more informed. Just wish Dell would make that a little more strait forward on their site.

BTW remember all that RAM everyone was buying like hot cakes... guess what no warranty on it either... unless you have a dell system of course.
