I think the forums are going to implode soon if this keeps up. :(

So much fighting... why can't everyone get along here? (or at least learn to TOLERATE each other) I've been seeing a lot of hostility around here lately, with people thread crapping here and flaming others there (i'm no angel when it comes to this) and I think the forums have degraded to a point where you can't even post a serious topic anymore, because 9 out of every ten answers will be either a smart-ass remark, thread crap or emoticon. Should your topic get past 20 posts, it usually ends up in a flame war that had nothing to do with the original topic.

All of this tends to get a bit old after a while.

Anyone have ideas as to what should be done? Or should we just let things progress as they are now and see what happens?

We agree with you N8
O.T. has degraded into a kiddie forum
Maybe we should just close O.T. altogether

There's too many people here to do anything else.

Eh?

The mods and admins have ultimate control. If they were to lay down some guidelines and enforce them, people would be pretty much required to comply, no?

Unfortunetly the mods don't seem to think its their problem either. See proposals for a subscriber OT - "Its not going to be happening"

I got no problem with flaming, i do my fair share of it too, but usually... if i am wrong or too harsh i apologize...

There have been a lot of heated topics lately... i think that's the reason of all the hostility...

Sure, but depending on what those guidelines are, people would probably just leave. Then where will the forum be? It's nothing without it's members.

Absolutely true.

I'm just trying to gather up some ideas to see what people think might make ATOT better. I'm not saying come crashing down with an iron fist. :)

I'm telling you, though, that if the mods start locking certain topics in OT and only "serious" threads or whatever can be made, most people's view of AT will quickly become negative. The mods seem to agree, but what can be done?

It's either they close off-topic or people have to adjust naturally. You can't make 95,000 people see things the way you do by being a forum gestapo.

That was never my intention.

Again, I agree.

I'm not saying lock every "non-serious" discussion. This *is* Off-Topic after all... all i'm asking is that people show a little respect for each other, that's all.

What's wrong with a little flaming? Personally, I come here for my daily fix of fun. There are tons of threads that you can go into and just have a good laugh at all the idiots who belive in this or that and the people who say they are wrong. That's what makes this such a great board. It would be pretty dull around here if everyone just agreed with everyone else. There are some true debates that go on here and that's what I like. People arn't afraid to speak there mind and give their oppinion on a subject. There are only a handful of subjects that most people here actually agree on (canadians, etc...) but even that stuff gets old after awhile. It's a disagreements that really get the blood pumping.

No, I agree sometimes ATOT is too childish, and irrelevant, but don't close it down, I don't have any ideas on what we can do, but a lot of the appeal of belonging to this forums is GH, and OT, OT was made to act as an over flow from GH right? If you stop OT GH will have to be moderated that much more heavily, what if you put out some guidelines for what is acceptable in OT? I know that when I first started posting in OT (I had made senior member in FS/FT) I made a lot of mistakes and got a lot of threads locked, because I didn't know what the rules were.

I think some moderator guidance at this point is probably required. In the near future, drop warnings when nefs take over popular threads and give them vacations when needed. The quote system abuse and thread derailing is getting very annoying at this point and it's fairly easy to point out about four people who are contributing most to that problem.

Of course what I said above may/may not be possible due to the low number of moderators on AT at this point in time. In any case, closing OT would be a terrible loss to the online community.

If you ask any of the oldtimers (for lack of a better term) they'll tell you it was much better in the past when the membership was a fraction of what it is now. If the mods start cracking down on the drivel type topic/posts it's been suggested that maybe people would then leave. I'm assuming you mean the people who use these forums as an AOL-type playground would no longer feel like coming here. Ask the oldtimers if that would be a bad thing.

Red has suggested a subscriber-only OT area. Etech is somewhat known for being vocal about the way these forums are going. A while back I, myself, threw out a suggestion to try and cut back on the drivel. Hell, just today there's been a few topics concerning the direction these forums are going. Wouldn't everyone agree that with all of this combined there's definately something amiss?
