Warning: newegg rant

Here's the basic story. I received several items from newegg that were purchased by someone other than me as a gift. The cdrw is defective so I called them and got an RMA #. They told me they would replace the drive (lite-on 24*10*40). The itme arrived at their facility on SAturday (I paid extra for tracking). So today is wednesday and I hadn't heard anything so I called. They told me the drive is no longer available so they will credit the CC the original amount. This presents a problem for me because the item was a gift. The unhelpful lady on the phone would not budge on their policy. I told her I would glady pay the difference for another drive and she said they could not do that. She also said there was no managere around for me to discuss this with further.

I sent them an email but likely will not rectify this situation. BTW this is not the first time I have had a problem with newegg but this is by far the worst. I have also read several other complaints recently. Guess it's time to spend my money elsewhere because it won't bother them a bit.

Uhhhhh, no. It's like store credit. I don't know of any store around that doesn't do that. And I know buy.com does it. The only hold up I could see is that it's on someone else's cc. But according to the lady, their "policy" wouldn't allow them to do that even if it was on my CC.
I know there's alot of newegg supporters and I used to push them to anyone I knew wanting to buy pc parts on-line or local. I just think that this situation made it clear they aren't in it to really aid the customer.

I'm sure you just got a cranky customer service rep. I'd keep calling until you can get ahold of someone higher up.

They seem to do this A LOT. I've heard many of these same stories about newegg, i even have my own. It's not really that big of a deal, its not like they're ripping people off or anything. It's still a little annoying though and i'm not sure what the point is of doing it in the 1st place.

uh, then he would lose the value of the CDRW he is returning, which was a free gift.

oops. I read that to be it was a gift he was buying for someone else. I didn't quite get why he was using someone else's credit card. Guess that makes sense...

I'll probably wait a couple of days to ensure the credit goes through or see if they respond to my email. Then it's off to mwave.com. I actually ordered a sound card from them about 2 weeks ago. It only ended up costing me .30 cents more than newegg but it did take a bit longer than newegg does to ship.
It's really no big deal, I was just hoping they would call it a wash with the defective one and just charge MY credit card for the difference of a newer drive. Oh well, I'll get over it.

What if you had since cancelled the credit card that you used to purchase the item? They would have to make some accommodation.

Not to mention their ridiculously long drawn out RMA/Refund policy. It takes at least 2 weeks to get a replacement part to my door. I will just keep my money local and buy from my local hardware shop. I will gladly pay $20-$30 extra for a CPU so I an return it that same day for another if I have a problem. Dot-Boom.

I'd talk to them again. Newegg sent me a beat up refurb case. I called up a second time to complain (Politely) and the guy said that they would just recredit my credit card. a week after that, I got a check from them. Never have I seen a company return a credit card charge in the form of a check.

God forbid she stick to policy instead of just changing the rules for you.

You got that right! Just get cash from the giver of the gift when they receive the credit. Then buy the CDRW you want wherever you want.

Sorry to hear the drive was defective from the start, though. :(

Good luck!

They are probably doing this because of getting screwed in the past by buyers purchasing on CC, returning, wanting store credit in exchange, then a few months down the road, doing a chargeback on the original amount due to item not as described/defective. As an online store, they can't get your signature (assuming you are even the original CC buyer) to prove their case later down the road. A full credit to the original CC closes the whole case.

Umm, am I missing something here? Why don't you just have the person who gave it to you as a gift order what you want as a replacement? Pay the difference if it's more, don't see what the problem is.
