If you enjoy going to get a drink/snack while installing a program and when you come back to see it still installing this is not the drive for you!!! My stupid 74GB Raptor is always done with the instilation when I come back!!! :(

You will not be able to blame you computer for being slow at installing any more it will be your own fault for not being around when the program prompts you to input something.

Consider your selves warned.

Wow, so you're saying it can even speed up my CD-ROM drive during an install, then :Q

;)

Glad to hear you are dissatisfied in this fashion, JBT :D So you're running that on the A7N8X's SATA controller, right? What drive did you have before it?

Actually Mech most of my apps are iso's that I already loaded on the Raptor ;) . Yes it is running on the on-board SI controller. Before this I had a 7200 RPM Maxtor D740X 40GB 2MB cache drive. It was quick for its time but it is quite out dated now.

I thought of that possibliity a few minutes after posting  Hey, can someone lend n7 a fresh battery for his Irony Detector?

I read the first post a tad too fast
I was actually thinking of getting one of the 36GB babies, but then i read the Anandtech review of the Raptor...& it pretty much seemed to say it wouldn't be that much of an improvement, so i was kinda wondering how great it really is.
Is it only in RAID setups that you'd see a much bigger performance jump?

Go for the 74gb version n7, i read somewhere that it is slightly faster access times and is less noisy, i got one and it is a lot faster that my old 80gb 7200 maxtor drive

Check out Storage Review for a good review of the 74 GB version. It can play with the 15 K SCSI drives in single user environments and its okay with multi user. It would be better if there were more SATA controllers which supported TCQ which helps Multi user out quite a bit.

I love my 74GB Raptor and it took all that I had to hold off on the Buy.com deal to purchase another for a Raid 0 setup...It does suck though bgecause now I can't organize my attack plan while waiting for a level to load in Command and Conquer Generals. Oh well....I guess life can't be perfect...haha

Glad it's so fast JBT. How does the noise level compare to that of your old Maxtor?

I've been tempted by the 74GB Raptor as well but my SN45G doenst have onboard SATA

LOL! I know the feeling. With 2 x 36GB Raptors in RAID 0, I can't step away from the box for a minute... Everytime I come back the PC just yawns, asks me where I've been, and demands the next install cd :)

The drive is pretty much silient at idle, the Maxtor had a bit of a whine to it. As for write and read noises they are there but they aren't annoying or anything it just lets you know its doing something.

Well, I will still stay with 10k SCSI raid0. It just blows the Raptor into the next decade. Not saying it is slow, but once you've gone SCSI, you'll never come back.

I went there and I did go back. SCSI was good compared to the 5400/7200 RPM drives but with the Raptors and SATA RAID 0 I was able to pay for my setup and still have money left over for other upgrades by getting rid of the SCSI stuff.
