Sorry, but once again M$ and it's OS also sucks. OK, you can't play with Linux. Well not most of the games, but for normal working, I prefer Linux.

This is a serious problem, and I think Microcrap should relase this patch as public patch!

ndee......not defending all of MS's screw ups, but, this seems to be an IBM 75GXP specific problem.....MS apparently knows about the problem, as well as IBM but I would summize that MS believes that in this case IBM should be the one patching the drive....and bearing the "tech support burden.....and rightfully so IF the problem is only on the IBM 75GXP drives! R0b0tN1k I'm not sure what you mean by that....but it sounds an awful lot like sarcasim......if you're running Linux/BeOS......then you deserve all the limits set upon you by those OS's! Windows....whatever flavor, is really the only viable alternative if you want a diverse system and the ability to play most games. As far as the patch......I have D/L'ed it.....but believe I will wait to apply it.....seems some more input/advice from IBM is needed here before doing anything drastic......I currently have 6 IBM 75GXP in use in systems in my home....would seem a shame to possibly hose them all apllying this patch with all the disclaimers/warnings attached to it! I do applaud you guys who have though.....let us know if anything appears to go wrong as a result! 😀

ToBeMe: What restrictions do you have besides gaming? Network? Linux rocks. Office Applications? They're a couple which are at least or even better than Office97/2000. Well yeah, that's my opinion, I don't want to start a Linux<->MicroWho? flamewar.

ndee To be honest, I used Linux for a while, it was....OK....but I just don't have the time to mess with it anymore! My kids want gaming on all the systems so their freinds can all come over and play, and to be honest, I ussually have a LOT of new hdwr.....like all USB mice, keyboards, Geforce Ultra, etc. and you know about Linux and USB and then there are the driver issues....they're there....but. I just wish there were more support for these OS alternatives but it seems noone sees any of them actually "contending" with MS in the near future, thus, little support is given. Another problem, and actually the reason I did away with Linux was, I now use 3 KT7-RAID boards and I'll be damned if they would set-up on the ATA-100 with my Mandrake Linux and I have to much hdwr. installed to put them back on the ATA-66 headers....i.e. LS-120, CD-RW, etc.! Like I said earlier, I'm sure they could....but I just don't have the time to sit down and mess with it, I like my systems up and running and diverse....Oh well, don't worry, you won't have a "flame war" with me....I just like discussions! 😀

Did anyone actually READ the link that ToBeME posted??? It very clearly states what the problem is: "According to Microsoft, the very fast systems sometimes power down before the contents of the large drive cache have been completely written to disk. In other words, the system shuts down before the OS can save what you were working on." Simple, isn't it? The computer is turning off BEFORE the cached data is written to the HD. As cache memory is VOLATILE, the data is lost once the power goes out, which can lead to a curropted HD.

So, the problem DOES have to do with the cache on fast HDs (they tend to have he largest caches) on fast computers (they can shutdown very fast). Why would you need to do a low level format to the HD when you are installing a software patch to change the way WinME/98 shutsdown??? You don't.

I'm also curious on an update to how everyone's machines are running after the patch. You can tell why by my sig.

Thanks Nox and Fumiup for the patches!

Yeah, thanks guys! I just applied the Micron patch about 30 minutes ago, but I don't notice anything different. I've only installed 98SE on Friday (new system) and shut down only few times so perhaps nothing bad happened. Hopefully though, it will prevent any trouble in the future. Thanks to all for the heads up info on the patches!

System basics: 1GHz Athlon T-bird, MSI K7TPro, Promise ATA100 PCI, two 15GB 75GXPs, 40GB Maxtor 40+, 256MB Mushkin CAS3 PC133, Win98SE.

Zak

PS. R0b0tN1k, you may not be aware of it but tere are games that don't run on 2000 so shut up.

I mentioned before that I didn't hear any low seeking noises after this patch... I MIGHT have been on the verge of crashing... you never know.

As far as telling the difference after the patch, it'll probably range from something like what I had to almost nothing. I don't think you can really tell anything until you apply this patch and it never corrupts on you or it actually does corrupt on you.

"There's only one way to find out"

You probably don't have to do a low level format. I had to because I couldn't do anything else. (I couldn't even load up my install disk.)

I don't know why the lady at IBM said that the patch had to be applied right after the install of Windows or it wouldn't work.

There is a chance that the patches are different (Maybe one is exclusive to IBM) I downloaded the one from Micron and it was a different size. Could just be difference in compression though.

anyone know if the drive has to be hooked up to an ATA100 controller to be at risk, or is it any ATA100 capable drive regardless of whether it is connected to ATA33, 66, or 100?

Plester, I want to know that too. I have had my eye on the 75 gxp for a while and something like this may make me think twice about a purchase.

This problem seems to be verified with the IT World review and the patches available from MicronPC. The patch is for Windows so any HD would be affected. I would guess that the IBM GXP's would be the one where the problem is noticed since it is the fastest IDE drive. I doubt the CPU speed makes any difference except how fast the system would be able to shut down. And people who power down manually wouldnt have the problem. Even with using fast shutdown the drive may be able to write the cached data quick enough. If the buffer was purged before it was saved if it wasnt critical data then you wouldnt know you lost it.

I dont know if the strange sounds are related but it doesnt seem likely that a OS patch could effect the hardware.

Ive been having problems with lockups lately. It mainly occurs in half-life when joining a game or switching maps the comp will freeze solid and i have to manually reset it. when this happens the harddrive light is lit up and its not accessing anything

i have the highpoint controller on the kt7-raid and 2 ibm 15GB 75gxp's raid 0

how can i fix this?

I have tried tons of diff bios settings but nothing helped.

This is a little OT but Syborg do you use the original fan that came with your Prophet DDR-DVI? The fan seems quite weak and mine makes a bad noise so I was thinking of getting a new one.

Sorry for the OT...

I think i'll apply that MicronPC patch. I'm running Win98se incidentally.

No, I took off the fan and put on a Vantec P1 cooler that I had sitting around from my old machine. If you would like to know how I did it, you are welcome to private message me.

About those hangups, i dunno if it is specific to newer HD's (75GXP, etc), but i get annoying hangups when running simple applications like IE, winamp, and AIM (all at once) also. This is on an old Maxtor 4320 13gig HD. Are the hangups due to the HD? And how many people with 75GXP's get hangups?

What OS are you runnin, 98se or me ? Also, did you install anything else between the time you booted up and applied the patch?

oldfart- did you even reformat or did you just install it? That may be what happens if you install without reformatting and all

Once AGAIN,

People who are getting lockups, IBM75GXP should NOT be used on Highpoint controllers in general.

Symptoms: Random freezing during disk access
HDD LED light stays lit after freezing
YOU HAVE A HIGHPOINT CONTROLLER 🙂

The 75GXP (as well as many other series) tends to have problems with highpoint in general for some reason. Why? I'm not sure, has to do something with the timings on highpoint chipsets.

Next guy in this thread that says he's having lockups on a highpoint controller should be shot for not paying attention 🙂

Do you have proof of this or is it just something you heard? I find it odd that the drives would have problems on the HPT controllers being that it is the chips used on most mobos with ata100 contorllers.

culex, very true.

But even without the incompatibility, Lowpoint driver is generally SUCK esp W2K one.

Now I've just moved to Promise RAID, no more freezing during heavy disk access (esp write access) with my dual IBM 75GXP.

this happened to me too. but it was on a k6-2 400 and win98SE. it was the secondary drive and it toasted the 1st drive too. fscking ibm and m$
