This is from PayPal's Help section. Read the last sentence. You can keep your personal account and start a separate business account.

Can I have multiple Personal PayPal accounts?
No. You can add additional email addresses, street addresses, credit cards and bank accounts to your personal account. You may also upgrade to a business account, or choose to start a separate business account altogether.

So, you only use your business account for situations where it is most convenient to pay with a credit card. 1.9% of the total is a hot deal considering the alternatives.

ProPay.com service fee is 3.5% of the total transaction amount, plus $.35. But to be fair, they give you a $10 start-up credit.

And Billpoint.com, only for eSlay charges
$0.01 - $10.00 0.00% + $0.39
$10.01 - $500.00 3.90% + $0.39

If you sell something at $100 here is transaction fees:
PayPal: $1.90
ProPay: $3.85
BillPoint: $4.29

I am extremely wary of PayPal after a recent episode where they locked my account without telling me and customer service was absolutely useless. I would caution everyone to be careful when using this service and to have your funds transferred to your account IMMEDIATELY upon receipt.

I started using PayPal in February for auctions on E-Bay. I ended up referring about 8 people to the service through family and friends and the link on my auctions. All of these referrals are legitimate users.

After an auction in early June, I let the money ($200) sit in my account for about a week before I went to withdraw it. That was the first time I found out my account was "restricted." I never received any kind of notice from them in E-Mail (although they have no problem sending me mail to update me on their new pay service), nothing. I wasn;t told why the account was "restricted," only that I had to fill out an "appeal" from the suspension. How can I do that if I don't know why it's restricted? So I called their 800 number.

The first person I talked to said she knows why my account is suspended but can't tell me over the phone. So she E-mailed me a note saying that it was suspended because of credit card fraud. WHAT??!? I called back immediately to find out what was going on. I'm an attorney and don't take allegations of fraud lightly. First got some guy that had no clue what was going on so he referred me to someone else. This guy then told me the first person was wrong, the problem is that it looks like you may have multiple accounts, and to fill out an appeal. When I demanded my appeal be done directly over the phone, he said they couldn't because they were in Omaha and the appeal center is in CA. But he promised me the appeal center would get to my appeal probably within 24 hours. This was a Friday, and I figured I'd try again Monday.

Still no luck on Monday. I sent another appeal in, and I called the 800 number and asked for a supervisor. The supervisors were "busy" and would call me back. 5 hours later I still didn't get a call back. So I called again and they were still "busy." I gave up and went to bed. On Tuesday still nothing had happened. So I sent yet another appeal, and called again and demanded that I be on hold until the supervisor was "available." Dinally after waiting about half an hour, I talked to a supervisor that said my account doesn't indicate why it was suspended but that it takes a week to clear usually. Huh? But she said she would look into it. Finally, on Wednesday my account was restored, and no specific reason was given.

Why am I so upset about this? For one, PayPal arbitrarily suspended my account while there was a large sum of money in there and didn't inform me. And when I called they couldn't give me a reason why. Furthermore, their operation is set up in a way that if they mistakenly lock your account, it takes awhile to get it reactivated and there is no way to directly contact the department to reactivate your account. I find this unacceptable when dealing with a de facto banking service.

So the moral of the story? Beware of PayPal. They have some customer service issues that need to be resolved. I would be wary of relying on them to handle my business income.

HEY DOLEMITE aka Erik - I had virtually the SAME problem, only Paypal LOCKED BOTH THE PAYPAL ACCOUNT AND THE XCOM BANK ACCOUNT THE FUNDS WERE DEPOSITED INTO!!! They froze a checking account with $2000+ in it! and froze ALL My Family's XCOM BANK ACCOUNTS and paypal accounts as well!!

Those links the other guys posted are links to my story, it got moved to off-topic if you'd like to post there....there are actually a starlign number of situations such as this, ive seen them just by looking at reviews at epinions.com on "xcom" Xcom freezes accounts WITH NO NOTICE, and checks start bouncing, causing serious headache! As an attorney, perhaps you should consider assembling a group of these people to take a stand against paypal/xcom , as they will keep operating this way until they are penalized for it!

MAN JUST RUN FROM PAYPAL AND XCOM AS FAST AS YOU CAN!! THEY OFFER NO CUSTOMER SERVICE AT ALL! THEY ARE CURRENTLY PARANOID BY THESE NET SCAMS and are so afraid that they will lock accounts for ANY reason and you wont be able to get your money!!!

Use Ecount instead, they are WAY better, have 24 hour customer service, take discover cards too, and they give you a unique "Internet Credit Card" number just like webcertificate to make those pricematch deals! (ex: you can have just $10 on your ecount mastercard so a company cant overcharge you!)
