It does work, actually. The mentos acts as a catalyst, accelerating the rate of decay of the carbonic acid, resulting in MASSIVE gas release. Dont' believe it? Go try it. Yeah, I blew up a Pepsi bottle with Mentos.. it was pretty fun. Didn't get any shrapnel in me, thankfully.

me and my friends made a dry ice bomb in hs from 2L. It took like 5 mins for it to go off, and when it exploded it made a cloud bigger than a car. Later the police rolled by and was like, you guys can't blow up fireworks here.
