I went food shopping today and bought a jar of peanut butter. Out of curiosity I read the ingredients on the side of the jar. At the bottom of the label was a warning:

"Warning: Contains Peanuts"

While obvious, it's probably required by law. Do you really want them to start making exceptions for allergy labels?

Hm...a good marketer could turn that into a brand name with its own logo.

I'd want to do it just to see if the FDA would still require a separate plain text warning stating the same thing.

"Warning: Contains Peanuts"

Years and years ago, the Sunday comics omitted this warning. I broke out in boredom.

Charles Schultz was asked about this.

He replied, "I know nothing, I see nothing, and I say noth - ing!"

It's really sad what society has become. Bunch of lawsuit happy idiots waiting for any chance to sue for the most ridiculous stuff, and yet the law system lets it happen. Companies are forced to have all these silly warnings so they can stay in business and not get sued to bankruptcy.

I agree that this is pretty ridiculous to put a warning on something that obvious has peanuts, but as somebody that has severe food allergies (milk and tree nuts) I really appreciate some of the labeling that they've started doing in recent years. Most companies now put the common allergens in bold in the ingredient list. You can pick up the item, glance at the ingredient list and instantly know if its safe to eat. With the common stuff in bold it's harder miss if its buried in the middle of a long list of stuff.

I think the warning isn't even enough. How many parents know that peanut butter might be harmful to their kids with allergies? I say we ban it just to be sure.

There should be a note on it that says "this product contains no dairy." People might mistake it for regular butter.

I also don't understand why it contains no peas.

No nuts either as far as that goes. The whole thing is an epic fraud perpetrated on the American people, and passed over by our bought and paid for FDA.

I started a thread last year about a container of mixed nuts that said, "warning: may contain nuts".

I was dumbfounded.

The obvious interpretation is that it also may /not/ contain nuts. It's a surprise pack! Open it up, and it may have pretzels :^D

FACTS:

1. The dangers of peanut allergies are grossly exaggerated.
2. The number of people with peanut allergies are grossly exaggerated.
3. The danger of peanuts to those with peanut allergies are grossly exaggerated.

Their has been mass hysteria over peanut allergies and for no good reason.
