Warning: Asus Branded DVD Combo drives

I just installed one into this computer. It was an OEM, Asus SATA drive from FRy's One second after firing up the computer, I smelled hot solder. As the computer was already hot (it's never shut down except for service), I didn't think twice about the smell.

Fifteen seconds later, it smelled so bad I couldn't wait to reach for the power cord and unplug. I didn't think that there was time for me to wait for Windows to shut down. I removed that Asus Combo drive and plugged in a Samsung ... fired it up & put the sides back on the case. No probs.

Sure, it's an isolated incident but I figured I'd post it anyway.

Thread title makes it looks it is a major batch problem or an issue with the Asus brand.
If this is just a one-off end-user's experience, why the "warning"?

Edit: AFAIK, the Asus might be produced in the same factory as the Samsung.

When a brand new component fries itself when plugged in for the first time ....

then.. that's bad .... poor quality control.

Thanks for the post......................

Don't scare me, i have 2 :|
