Warning another paypal scam...

The same people who fall for this are the same people who have the AOL virus installed on their computer and have no buisness on the internet. They are also the same people who post here as soon as they sign up without reading the FORUM RULES or hanging around to find out what is acceptable and what is not.
 
Hmmm... iknow there is a rule on the FS/T forum that if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. For those that are yelling for a lock and ban, ok, we will lock your account and ban you.

This could save a person a headache or two. Yeah, I am sure they deserve what they get, but then I bet you never did anything stupid and regret it later (some your parents might have). The mods allow it as we are only human and are prone to mistakes. Little warnings help out.

Also, if you would have said nothing, this probably would have just went on it's way down, but because you had to type a response, it has kept it alive.

Hey, does this mean all those penis elargement emails aren't real :Q Then maybe everytime somone gets one of those that should be posted to fool.

Although funny, no. Those would have no effect on my financial well being where as clicking on a link that has my personal/financial information stored could be.

i do not understand why you guys are so opposed to a thread that could do some good? It takes about 2 seconds to read the title and decide that you are not interested and move along instead of posting the crap you do. Truely if I were an admin I would give you all a time out to grow up. You guys are worse than my two and three year old fighting over a toy.

Take a chill pill, decide that this is not worth your effort, and move along without a care for those that may be stupid and actually complete the email or some Noob who has no idea and come in here seing this for the first time and becomes a little wiser in the world.

For humanity's sake, I hope some of you do not reproduce. You will taint the gene pool.
 
Sorry, about my sarcastic post before. I guess I'm still amazed that people fall for this stuff.

Here is a simple rule to avoid being scammed from a fake email.

NEVER CLICK ON A LINK FROM AN EMAIL THAT YOU RECEIVE AND ENTER PERSONAL INFORMATION!!

NO LEGITIMATE COMPANY SENDS OUT EMAILS THAT HAS A LINK ASKING FOR ALL YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION.

NEVER POST YOUR DRIVERS LICENSE, SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER TO ANY WEB SITE/LINK.

If you believe that you have received a fake email, forward it to the site that it purports to be from (i.e. spoof@paypal.com). The companies take this type of fraud very seriously and they will follow up on it!

 
This is a very interesting topic. All of you tech-saavy people seem to know everything about how a scam works, how not to fall for one, and yada yada yada. You're saying that if someone falls for a scam then they deserve it? What if your mother checked her email one day, and thought that was legitimate? Would you call her an idiot?? I dont think so, you'd be too busy calling the credit companies to cancel her cards.

Look, idiot. NOBODY disagrees that SOMEONE on ATHD who happens to read this warning might be "saved" from getting scammed. However, the relevant question is: is it a DUTY of ATHD to warn people about potential scams? I mean, where do we stop? Why don't we also warn people about the dangers of cigarette smoking (oh whoops, that thread got LOCKED) or tell people not to play in traffic. This is Anandtech, not Warn-o-tech...and in case you didn't glance up at the forum name, let me remind you that this is HOT DEALS, not "Hot Scams." You've got to realise, most poeple that are on forums such as these are the super nerdy type who have to feel big by flaming others instead of going out and getting chix.
 
Thanks for these posts. I use this time to time to remind my mom and pop, and relatives, who aren't too computer savvy, but use paypal, to watch out and becareful. You can never be too careful. Thanks.
 
I have said this once and I will say it again....

It is true that most people on this forum -- I would dare to venture 98% -- do not actually need such warnings to avoid these PayPal scams. However, I know several of us have relatives who are online, yet are not, how shall we say, the brightest bulbs in the garlic patch. (Mixed metaphors. Wheee) While my relatives have since gotten offline I used to copy and paste these scam e-mails into messages to them, under giant 8-foot-tall letters that said "THIS IS A SCAM! IF YOU SEE THIS E-MAIL DON'T REPLY TO IT AND DON'T CLICK ANY OF THE LINKS!" I'm sure it must have kept them from losing money on at least one occasion.

Besides, its just a forum topic. It's not like its wasting hundreds of dollars worth of valuable anandtech bandwidth. Well, at least it wouldn't if you reprobates didn't flame these threads all the time.
