When putting on ear muffs, don't do it with your gun in your hand. You might accidentally shoot yourself in the head. Its easy to inadvertently aim the handgun at the side of your head while putting on those muffs.
Yeah, I did that. Not today, but like a long time ago and I just thought I'd share so you guys don't die. I realized it hours after it happened and never did it again. It was over a year ago by now and I was shocked that it happened and even more shocked that other people do it all the time and no one ever notices it. Crazy shit right there.

There are lots of safety rules that don't get followed. Never hurts to restate the obvious.

1. Always Keep The Muzzle Pointed In A Safe Direction
2. Firearms Should Be Unloaded When Not Actually In Use
3. Don't Rely On Your Gun's "Safety"
4. Be Sure Of Your Target And What's Beyond It
5. Use Correct Ammunition
6. If Your Gun Fails To Fire When The Trigger Is Pulled, Handle With Great Care!
7. Always Wear Eye And Ear Protection When Shooting
8. Be Sure The Barrel Is Clear Of Obstructions Before Shooting
9. Don't Alter Or Modify Your Gun, And Have Guns Serviced Regularly
10. Learn The Mechanical And Handling Characteristics Of The Firearm You Are Using
11. When going deer hunting always make sure to take your dear wife.

When instructing a class on the proper technique of Uzi shooting, don't give the gun, unassisted, to a 9 year old girl.

Put it on before you have a gun in your hand. Next time you go shooting in the desert or country, see if you find someone doing that and tell me they can't accidentally blow their head off. Its easy to do it without even noticing.

Darwin has been cheated.... this time!

Don't worry, though; he'll eventually get what is owed to him.

It boils down to "Don't do other things with a hand in which you're holding a gun."

Should be pretty obvious.

Yeah, except its not. Just like locking your kids in a hot car is obviously something to avoid, until it happens to you.

Speaking of which, there are laws against leaving old people in cars. Old people... People old enough to understand how to operate a fucking car door. Seriously? If you are so old, you can't make heads or tails out of the door handle on a Civic, sorry, but you're of zero use to society.

Now, if only we could have a thread about posting safety with regards to individuals with psychological disorders...

Start one. You won't do it. You are probably way too sane to do something interesting anyway.

Don't use your gun as ear muffs either.

OP, as a safety guy at work I want to applaud you for posting this. I constantly tell people, let's learn from other people's mistakes.

That doesn't mean it's not obvious, just that you were careless.

One thing I say at work all the time after I tell someone not to do something stupid and they give me that look. "I know, I know. But sometimes you have to state the obvious."

The fun of being in the safety game is that you never know what you prevent. OP could have saved someones life with this post, and we will never know.
