Warning about drinking too much water during a marathon

drinking a gallon before a marathon and then drinking more during the event itself is just plain dumb. Marathons are run slow enough that you dont sweat that much. Everybody drives it into your head these days that you have to drink as much water as possible though. I don't drink any water on any of my runs though and I'm just fine.

I seem to recall reading somewhere about ultra-endurance athletes taking salt pills. Would that have prevented the situation in the OP?

This happened with some girl who did Extacy too.

WTF?!?!

Well its more of a sideeffect of extacy, they get really hyper and dance alot, and drink tons of water because they become afraid of getting dehydrated.

e dehydrates you so you drink a lot because you are super thirsty. It has nothing to do with fear, its the actual fact of being dehydrated.

However an official inquest determined that her death was not directly due to ecstasy consumption, but rather the large quantity of water she had consumed, apparently in observation of an advisory warning commonly given to ravers to drink water to avoid dehydration

There are numerous salt (table salt = NaCl) and electrolyte pills on the market, as well as sports drinks including electrolytes. There is a limit to GI absorption that I believe is lower than losses at typical sweat rates, i.e. it is impossible to completely keep up. However, it is usually not a problem if the person has at least some electrolyte intake.

I take a product called "Endurolytes" prior to and during long races when it's really hot. Not only do they help prevent cramps, they'd also ward off hyponatremia should you be one of those people who can't get a sports drink down when it's hot.

Most bike shops carry these capsules.

how is this new? they've been warning about it for a while now. yes if you keep drinking while running ur probably gonna drink a lot more then you actually sweat out😛

There was a pledging incident on the campus of SMU in Dallas where they made a kid drink like 4 gallons of water....he died in the hospital.

Too much of anything can kill ya, sometimes u just wont know how.
