Warmish - Walmart PC's w)out Windows

Interesting option for the Linux/BeOS community. Like 98% of these aren't going to be running pirate copies of 98. Either way, something neat to point to when Grandma asks you to get her a computer 🙂

Gah these are awfully priced - they're nothing but Bulk parts - do you really think "Microtel" is gonna spring for quality mobos? The T-Bird is probably the most valuable part in this system (the T-Bird sys, at least) - plus, that case is COMPLETELY unsuited for an Athlon. Here I thought these MIGHT be bargains...but you'd get better quality buying a barebones from a local mom and pop screwdriver shop.

I don't know.. that Pentium 4 1.6ghz with 128mb for $499 doesn't sound like a bad price to me. The $100 upgraded models come with 256mb of SDRAM instead of 128mb, 40GB hdd isntead of 20GB, and a 16x10x40 CD-RW instead of 52X CD-ROM.

Many "local mom and pop screwdriver shops" will build you a system with
better quality than most of the major corps like HP, Compaq and Dell,
for around the same price that the major corps charge.

I don't know about that. The mom&pop around here price their systems at $900&up. They can't compete with the volume pricing that the national chains can get.

yeah, my parents got their last computer from a mom and pop,a nd it was way overpriced compared to what i got from Dell, i'm not a builder, otherwise i'd do it my self, but i have this thing about seeming to always screw things up 🙂

Yeah the mom and pop shops cannot beat the prices that Gateway and Dell are offering in their price war and pricematching war right now. If you buy the parts from the cheapest places on the net and build it yourself you can beat the Gateway/Dell prices but not by all that much. The time and effort in finding the cheapest prices, placing the orders and building it is worth something. I think it's close to a wash right now. I've never seen PC prices from the large OEM's go so low. It's amazing.

If you just need a quick comp or are getting it for something else then Dell, Gateway, etc. would be something to consider. But otherwise, I would much prefer building it myself. Although the money you save may not be as much as it used to, it is sometimes hard to find exactly what you are looking for, not to mention the satisfaction of building your own rig. Also it's not like it takes days to compile a list of the best prices from good vendors, etc. If you already know what you are looking for you could have everything ordered in less than an hour at basically the best prices.

also those walmart systems have sdr ram (as opposed to ddr) - in the case of the athlon and ESPECIALLY in the case of the bandwidth hungry p4, thats really going to hold these systems back
