it prevents crime, just like other laws.

People should be punished for their stupidity, but this is just a city trying to make some $$ by telling people it is for their own good. Fining them is just another way of taxing them, and lets face it we already have a tax for stupidity; it is called the lottery.

Who pays the cops for all those stolen cars to be recovered?

I dont know how it is where you live, but when you file a police report for a stolen car here, they say "oh", file it in their database as stolen, update some statistics, let the cops read a list of the stolen vehicles before hitting the street, and thats about all. Unless your car is highly unusual, like say a MG, an old school VW bus, etc 95% of the time if your car is recovered it is when the cops run the plates for another reason, ie it is abandoned somewhere, or when they pulled someone over for speeding. Other than towing it to the impound lot, they dont spend much cash on this whole thing, and often enough the person who the car was stolen from pays for the tow to the impound lot, or they dont get the car back.

And is a good municiple money-maker, just like a lot of other bylaws.

WTF is next, can't walk outside at night because you could get mugged or killed. This is just another example of how the government wants to run your god damn life. When are people going to wake the hell up and put an end to the fvckin stupidity. :|

Regardless of the reason they do it, idiots who leave their car doors unlocked while the engine is running deserve to be ticketed for their stupidity. I don't care how safe your area is. Would you leave thousands of dollars out there for someone to take ?

As a matter of fact, I think the cop should drive it down the block and leave it there. That'll teach 'em. I'd gladly trade that for the ticket income based on the entertainment value alone.

Saw one parked in a fire zone running unattended while the owner was inside chatting with his buddy, the supermarket cop a few weeks back.

HA! That would be sweet! "Citizen Ticketing!"

I should have yelled Free car and then ran towards it. Knowing my luck the cop would have came and shot me though

I'm guessing this is only in public places? I can't imagine getting a ticket when the car is in my own driveway.

Police officers will ticket cars they see running and unattended when time allows and that can include in private driveways and parking lots. Police also said locking the doors on an unattended vehicle is not sufficient to avoid a ticket.

If you have a No Trespassing sign can you shoot at them while they are ticketing your car in your driveway?

Being sarcastic, but this "law" is STUPID

I live in a 3rd floor condo. I like to start my car to melt the ice/frost off the windows in the morning. I start it with a remote starter. Its locked, and there are no keys in the ignition. I don't see how this could warrant a ticket. Its just like the car being locked, and not running..because if they break in, and push a pedal, the car turns off.

It warrants a ticket because they want your money. Period.

Yeah cops leave their cars running ALL THE TIME. Just another law that cops are exempt from...

Cops are supposed to keep their cars running at all times, its SOP and they can actually get in trouble if they don't, unless they are not in the direct vicinity of the vehicle. I know thats the case in at least all the New England states... its keeping the equipment at the ready while on duty.

Yet another law that will never take hold in Canada. ;)

- M4H

But Toronto does have the 3 minute idle law.

Whatever you do, don?t pee in Canada

Guelph Canada, is considered a ?no-pee? zone.

Uxbridge residents who want to be connected to the internet are not permitted to have a connection faster than 56K.

Kanata, the colour of a person?s house and garage door is regulated by the city. Having a purple door can get a homeowner a fine.

Oshawa, young kids that climb trees are breaking the law.

Every fifth song on Canadian radio must be by a Canadian born citizen. (No wonder Celion is so popular up there)

Canada of course is not alone in whacky Laws:

Victoria, Australia, it is illegal to change a lightbulb unless you are a licensed electrician.

China, it is illegal to have more than one child.

Singapore, the sale of chewing gum is illegal.
