lots of potential YMMV here:
YMMV1: Best Buy is currently running a 'Buy $100+ of Video Games/Video Game Accessories, get $20 Gift Card Back.' (Find the promotion at the top of page 14 of this week's BB ad) When I went to check out, the cashier told me I had the option of applying the $20 directly to the purchase. I didn't even ask for this so it seems like it's possible it could be a specific policy for this deal. Additionally, he applied it to the order with ease... it seems like it was almost automatic in the computer. Whatever the case, you're still guaranteed a $20 gift card - the YMMV is whether u can use it toward the current purchase or only future purchase.
Now: $100 - $20 = $80
YMMV2: Use the Best Buy $5 off Video Game/Video Game Accessories Coupon on each item. I bought 2 Games (Mario Kart and Rogue Squadron 3) and the GameCube Broadband Adapter to break $100, so I was able to use 3x $5 off Coupons for a total of $15 off. So basically I got the broadband Adapter for free, but you could use it with a cheaper third item, like a memory card. Actually the more items you get to break $100, the more $5 off coupons you could use...! It seemed like it was more of a hassle for the cashier to get the $5 off coupons to work in conjunction with the above $20 gift certificate, so this is probably a bigger YMMV (although my cashier managed to pull it off in a round-about way [he inputted coupons as manufacturer coupons instead of best buy coupons] without having to ask a manager). There is probably some Best Buy policy about stacking coupons/promotions that the cashier doesnt know about but computer/manager do. It could be that the coupons might have a better chance of working if u just take the $20 gift certificate and dont apply it to the order.
Now: $100 - $20 - $15 = $65
YMMV3: Does 2x $49.99 games count as breaking $100? I think the fine print says it doesnt include tax, but a newbie/nice cashier probably wouldn't notice. It all depends on whether the computer would notice. I didn't try it myself, but if it would work, you could end up getting two brand new games for $35 + tax ($100 - $20 - $10 [2x 5$ off coupons]).
YMMV4: Does the cashier apply the $20 gift certificate first or the $5 off coupons? If the $5 off coupons bring the price below $100, will the $20 gift certificate work (as in YMMV3)? Try only mentioning the $5 off coupons after the $20 gift certificate is applied. If nothing else, this same promotion stipulates that you get a $10 gift card for any purchases over $75 dollars.
YMMV5 - PURE OPTIMISM- : If you happen to get the broadband adapter and Mario Kart as I did: since Mario Kart is going to be a big seller for the broadband adapter (in fact, I was surprised because Best Buy had a large stock of broadband adapters - so I assume they stocked up just for Mario Kart), I am anticipating that some retailer will probably be offering a Mario Kart/broadband adapter combo at a reduced combo price in the coming weeks. When/if that happens, I will price match at Best Buy for an even better deal (for example: "Buy Mario Kart and broadband adapter and save $10")
Possible combos (does not include tax):
2x 49.99 games: $100 - $20 - $10 = $70 ($35/game) [note YMMV3 and 4]
3x 49.99 games: $150 - $20 - $15 = $115 ($38.33/game)
3x 39.99 games: $120 - $20 - $15 = $85 ($28.33/game)
4x 29.99 games: $120 - $20 - $20 = $80 ($20/game)
2x 49.99 games + 19.99 memory card = $120 - $20 - $15 = $85
2x 49.99 games + 34.99 broadband adapter = $135 - $20 - $15 = $100
5x 19.99 (Platinum/Greatest Hits/Players Choice) = $100 - $20 - $25 (5x $5 off) = $55 ($11/game) [note YMMV4]
7x 19.99 (Platinum/Greatest Hits/Players Choice) = $140 - $20 - $35 (7x $5 off) = $85 ($12.14/game)
these are just some ideas. mix and match as you like. and remember this works for any combination of gamecube/xbox/ps2/gameboy. i dont know if it applies to PC games or to the consoles themselves... PC games and consoles would have to be YMMV6
fyi: the $5 off coupon is found in the 'Gamer's Gift Cards' that can be found very plentifully somewhere on the shelf next to the video games themselves. on the back of the gift card (which is contained in what looks like a standard clear CD case with black or green insert) is a coupon for $5 off any video game or video game accessory (the new black versions specify PC games too) that is $19.99 or up. so you can just buy a bunch of gift cards (put $1 or $5 on each one) and then use those same gift cards to make your own purchase, in addition to using the coupons.
fyi2: broadband adapter allows mario kart to be played in a LAN configuration (up to 16 players i believe). there is a fan based effort to make it work online, but this is unofficial similar to xbox halo online play. more info at www.warppipe.com
