I'm sure most of you know Sony is phasing out the 120GB & 250GB systems & replacing them with a 160GB & 320GB.

As part of a fire sale, if you want to call it that, Fry's reduced the price on the 250GB down to $299 & rumors of the 120GB system are that it will be dropped to $249.

I was at Fry's in San Jose yesterday & can confirm that both systems were sitting on the shelves & were priced at $299. Why Fry's would price both systems at the same price is beyond me, but considering it's Fry's, I'm really not that surprised.

Amazon has the 160 GB in stock now and is accepting pre-orders for the $399 320 GB + Move bundle.

If you want a lot of storage space, the best deals would be either the Move bundle or a $249 120 GB then a 500 GB or 640 GB laptop drive from Newegg. Be careful about a 750 - 1 GB drive since they are thicker than standard laptop drives and might not fit.

Edit: There may not be many 120 GBs out there to discount, given it has been in short supply most of the year. Amazon sold out their own stock of 120 GBs last week and switched to other vendors, with Target being the last one listed that I've heard of.

I have to laugh at 320GB being a lot of storage space.

Cant you just have a HDD on your network act as a streaming storage medium? My borther talks about doing that with his PS3.

Yes the PS3 will connect to DLNA servers to stream audio & video. The built-in wifi is G not N so you might want a wired connection for video.

Sadly the PS3 doesn't support FLAC, so I can't just put in a 500 GB drive to use it as a lossless music server for my CD collection (a bit over 300 GB). I could transcode to something like 320 kbps MP3 but that's not quite the same.

I believe PS3 supports PCM audio files. Instead of transcoding to mp3, set it to PCM. If for some reason you don't want or can't do it on the fly, you'll need a larger HDD.

Update:

Fry's on Hamilton sold all of the 250GB systems they had on Friday for $250 & the 120GB systems were reduced by $20 to $279 (what a joke).

I don't know when they receive their shipments, but I'd guess it's on a regular basis (couple or even a few times a week). Might not hurt to call ahead of time & see who does have them in stock.
