If you can get a good sample without the 'red flash' issue or too much backlight bleed / clouding (endemic to most larger LCD panels), then the V5100 is a fine TV. I got the 46-inch model during the Best Buy PS3 bundle promotion, and the picture is fantastic, and I've not yet noticed any red flash. However, I've an obnoxious backlight bleed in the upper-left corner which I can't unsee. Debating whether to return mine.

We've a last-generation Pioneer KURO at my parents' house, and though the Sony's picture isn't comparable (especially, of course, the blacks), it's very respectable, especially considering the price. And just this past summer I bought the Samsung LN40B630 (comparable, perhaps slightly superior picture to the Sony) for over $900. $600 for a 40-inch V5100 is definitely a deal.
