Warm? Radeon 9600SE for $79AR at CUSA

CompUSA has ATI Radeon 9600SE for $79 after $20IR and $30MIR (here). The card might be slow, but it's still way better than all those el cheapo fx5200s.

PS: Some of the 9600SE's at CUSA a couple months ago turned out to be 9600Pro's, but I guess they're all long gone now.

Sapphire makes the BBA cards. With that in mind, at around $70 it's probably better than a 128MB R9100 but a used Ti4200 would be preferable.

The 3 I saw on the shelf Sunday all had the HL2 coupon (according to the front of the box). Not a bad deal if you can find one with the coupon.

Take note of the "SE". So this would be a good 2D card but not much of anything else.

Anyone know which card would be better, this one (9600 SE) or the ATI Radeon 9200? Looking for an inexpensive card for a friends computer. He doesn't play much games... only stuff like Diablo II, Age of Empires, Civ III, Medal of Honor, Unreal Tournament, and the like. Or can you guys recommend a card around $100 that might be better?

There's a bunch of regular 9600's for under $100 at newegg. Or you can try and find a used TI4200 which would most def. be under $100 as suggested previously.

I've heard some with 9100's who replaced them with 9600se's say that the 9100 was quite a bit faster actually. A ti4200 would be the best though, and you should be able to get one for $80.

For a guy who doesn't play much games, he is playing all the recent FPS that require a decent vid card.

I am still sportin my Geforce 2 GTS until HL2 comes out. I am sure he will be fine with the 9600se

Not hot... it's not a great card by any means and especially not for $79 w/ a rebate.

The 9600 would be better than a 9600se. The difference is that the 9600se has 4 - 64bit pipelines instead of 4 - 128 bit pipelines like the 9600.

I know in my testing, a TI4200 was faster than a 9500 in DirectX8 games, but the 9500 killed the TI4200 in DirectX9 games. I'm sure that the 9600 would be better all around. The 9600 has a slower clock speed than the 9500, but the memory is faster on the 9600 so I'm not sure how it would fair.

Thanks. Guess I'll recommend a 9600 for my friend then since I can pick up a 9600 and a 9600se for about the same price.

Check newegg. They have OEM 9600 cards starting at $93.75. Retail 9600's start at $95.50, such as the Sapphire ATI Radeon 9600. Not exactly the same price as the $79 9600se at CUSA, but if it's better (128-bit vs. 64-bit), then the extra $15 would be worth it.
