WARM: Panasonic RP56U Progressive Scan DVD $160

Did my homework and found that the Panasonic Rp56U Progressive Scan DVD player to be one the best of the new progressive scan players available, it contains the Sage/Faroudja de-interlacing chip only found in high end video equipment. Got the cheapest price on line $177 printed it out and went to Sears. They price matched the web site and because I used my Sears card got an Xtra 10% off, totaling $160.

So while you d00ds where fighting Joe Six-Pack for the cheapest soon to break POS dvd player, I scored a top of the line progressive scan for $160. What's more is I did this on Monday, no waiting in line for me....... me=tey winnar!!

Seriously guys, you want a progressive scan dvd player this is the one to get. So do what I did and go to Sears..... $160 Progressive Scan DVD deal just can't be beat!!! (at least I don't think so...)

Where did you get an online price for $177. Is that with shipping. Best deal on this player I found so far has been though 800.com I believe buying for them you can get it for 225 then you get 40 in rebates bring it down to 185. If I could pricematch this on my AMEX to your 177. That would be 48 more dollars off. Bringing the total to around $140.

Does sears or amex allow pricematching without shipping charges in it?

That's true I believe you do need an HDTV to have the benefits of using Progressive scan. And I believe you are also correct in that regular tv's are interlaced. And progressive scan shows you the whole picture at once.

I'm normally a reg at HardOCP and very rarily post here, (hence the low post count duh) But I've lurked enuff in the Hot Deals forum here and got some pretty decent deals from you guys so when I got my Panasonic DVD player for what I considered a good deal I thought I would share.....

First off to RieperNYC, well there's always one A-Hole in every crowd and buddy your the one in this crowd. You're a complete and utter idiot; can you type www.pricewatch.com?? That's where I found the Panasonic RP56U for $177.99 at 2 different sites... it does not matter if the website is rated low your not buying it from there just print the web page for Sears to match. I'll even be kind enuff to post a link for ya...

Now for the rest of the NORMAL responses here's your answers:

PsychoAndy: I'm not sure if it plays VCD's as it's still boxed up for Christmas. Goto the AVSforums www.avsforums.com they might be able to tell ya if it supports VCD's.

nater: A progressive scan dvd player when matched to a HD compatible set and hooked up through the 3 jack component video will show a very fine detailed picture, it is VERY noticable. A normal interlaced DVD player outputs like a normal TV picture in that it displays every other line. A progressive scan dvd player when connected properly will display every line(2X the resolution), but again you have to have an HD compatible set to get the benefit. And I'm sure others can give you a more technical explanation than me... check the AVSforums mentioned above....

KK: Follow the link I posted above it's now up to $182.99. Sears does pricematch and they are supposed to add 6% for the difference in shipping, but I have done internet price matching through the Beaumont, TX store for 4 different electronics/appliances purchase over the last year and they have yet to add the 6%. Just make sure you get a saleperson and not a Dept. Manager and print ONLY the web page I linked to show to the Sears Salesperson, not the shopping cart page showing shipping; if ya don't bring it up they probably will not charge the 6%. Also, they are currently running a deal if you use your Sears card you get an Xtra 10% off the price in Electronics and Appliances.(maybe other depts as well I dunno)

Mixxen: Yes like I posted in response to nater you do need a HD compaticle TV to get the full benefits, but because the RP56U has the Sage/Faroudja de-interlacing chip you do get the benefits of nearly ZERO jaggies that plague most DVD players. The Sage/Faroudja de-interlacing chip is usually only found in high-end home theater equipment, it's really a steal to get it in a DVD player this cheap even at it's normal price of $225. Again, for a more technical explanation try the AVSforums.....

Remember Sears just needs the printed page of the product your buying for price match verification. They have yet to check out the web site when I have pricematched at Sears, so take that into consideration when your looking for the cheapest price on the web......

I'll side with ripper the first post sounded like it belongs in brag and moan. It didn't say check pricewatch, check yahoo shopping for the price to match with sears. I was confused at first as to where to fint the 177 price. Some people just think of pricewatch for computer parts, from shady dealers. I really don't notice any major difference on my 36"wega xbr 450 though. Your milage may vary. This could have been due to the movies I watched (swordfish, tomb raider), but still a nice player. You really can get only as good of picture as the dvd is made for.

I have re-read my first post and still don't see why you guys were confused, does everyone have to spell it out in excruciating detail?? I thought most of the seasoned regs here would know where to check for the best price, heck it fluctuates daily so even though I did post a link in my followup that price will not be good for long. The point of the first post in this thread was FIND the best price on the Net for the Pany RP56U and get it pricematched at Sears with an additional 10% off for using your Sears Card. Now I ask, how hard is that too understand??

Most peeps aren't trying to flame. They are basically saying a hot deal is defined as a deal that is legal, current, and reproducable. One doesn''t need to be a seasoned hot deal shopper to be able to participate in a hot deal.

So the reason it was suggested your initial post sounds like a brag and moan is because you left out the details for normal (sometimes even clueless) people to reproduce the deal.

If you are looking for a True progressive scan panasonic you would look at This player. Don't ask me the techs on the differences, but it you will be able to tell the difference on HDTV. True progessives give a true 480p output whereas digitals don't. Digital progessives act more like line doublers.

In short, movies that were shot in film will look better with a true progressive scan. The frames per second is different for movies shot digitally and on film. Film is shot at less frames per second, so when it gets formatted to DVD, the makers must insert something like 10 frames per second. This is where a true progressive scan will shine.

WRONG WRONG WRONG. The RP56 is one of the FINEST progressive scan players available. The Sage/Faroudja chip is TOP NOTCH. This player is FANTASTIC.

Sorry to shout - I get so tired of explaining this to people who are just SO SURE, but SO WRONG.

The RP91 you link to at MORE AUDIO is also a great player. It uses the Genesis chipset, which has some strengths and weaknesses of its own. The RP91 also has some audio features for CD listening. But both players do a wonderful job in progressive scan.

I was thinking of buying this one for my parents:

Toshiba SD3750 for $175 at The Good Guys

I would assume that "Digital Cinema Progressive" is the thing that rickforest is trying to explain but I doubt my parents will notice the difference. Anyone have any comments on this player?

I own both the RP56 and 3750 and both are fine machines. I like the 3750 for it's menu's and it saves the spot in the movie you stopped at, the RP56 you have to remember the chapter and skip to that point. Also one thing that irk's me with the RP56 is that it only has an OPTICAL output for digital sound just like the XBOX HD Pack so unless your reciever has 2 TOSLINK connector's it will be a hassle. The Toshiba 3750 has coaxial and optical. If you watch alot of video sourced DVD's the RP56 is slightly superior but both are on par with film based DVD's.

Just a few differences I noticed that could be important in decision making besides price..
