Hi!
According to Modem Site, there are advantages to using the Lucent WinModem - primarily that there are many of them out there, and a generic one can use any of the drivers out there from many different companies, including Lucent's own drivers.
The latest DSP for this modem is the 1648c chip, which allows use of the latest V.92 drivers.
Well, CompGeeks has an "Encore" brand generic Lucent WinModem for $13.95 which has the latest 1648c DSP chip.
Go to Tech Bargains and they have a 10% off coupon code (and be nice and use their link to make the purchase).
I just installed this modem under WinXP, and at first, using the original XP CD-ROM drivers (5.98a), I connected to my ISP at 49.2 (same as my old modem). Then, I went to Windows Update Catalog (which is accessible from Windows Update), and downloaded the 6.04 drivers (they are under "Agere" - Lucent's new name), and my connect speed went up to 50.6. Then, I went back to Windows Update Catalog and downloaded the 8.20 drivers which are supposed to support V.92. I installed those, and now I connect at 52.0 . My current ISP does not support V.92, so I can't test whether it actually upgraded to V.92, but that is what Modem Site says that 8.20 does - and the ATi3 command now reports "V.92".
BTW, please no "why would anyone want a modem" posts!:disgust: There were enough of those in the last modem deal thread.
