If you need a low grade laptop and need earthlink internet then deal is solid after rebates... $299 for a celery 1.2 after rebates from acessmicro and earthlink.

Very interesting offer, the only thing I don't understand is
External 12 Cells 2000mAh 88Wh Li-Ion Battery (Sold seperately)
Does this mean it has no internal battery pack?

Yep, no internal battery. This thing is a DeskNote - not a try lappy. It's meant to be a small form-factor desktop replacement.

It's basically a desktop on wheels. This thing must get frying hot with all the desktop components inside.

since this computer is really $500, the toshiba laptop that is frequently available for $500 is a better choice. a little more tied up in rebates, but same end price, and a far superior computer.

I've got a question about this unit. It says it uses a Celeron 1.2, which I would think was a Tualatin CPU, however it lists the internal cache as 128k, instead of 256k. Am I missing something here, or is that simply a misprint. I also wonder how the active matrix screen compares to other laptops.

It's really funny how they're trying to convince ppl that they want an external battery pack, and very careful not to show you the battery pack:

? More space for cooling that big honkin' desktop CPU
? Over 90% of laptop users use their laptop with an AC adapter (you wouldn't want to be caught without one, would you?)
? Makes the X-Book lighter. It's only 7 lbs instead of 8.6 lbs* (*you must carry the battery pack to use the X-Book without AC outlets. Dimension: 216 x 98 x 28 mm )
? Keeps your laptop company. Without it, your X-Book might become lonely and refuse to boot.

I just find it funny that they'd position this as the "Future PC" where its a niche mobile product at best.

Still, if you can use the rebates, its not a bad deal.

OT. Have never seen this posted here, but thought it worth sharing (they come recommended by SuperDave--one of the mods over at ArsTechnica).

RetroBox Very reasonable prices on used low-end
laptops.

cheers, and Merry Christmas,

If it's really 88W then I'd purchase an ice pack to lay it on. That's a lot of trapped heat inside such a small enclosure.

Doubt it. 88W.
