Warm - IBM 60GXP 60GB Hard Drive $99.95 at Outpost

I have a nice big long post about all this on the following thread:
http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=27&threadid=738373&STARTPAGE=2

Basically IBM says the 60gxp and 120gxp have about 20,000 hours expected life (about 2 years if you run it 24/7, or 5 years if you run it the reccomended 11 hours a month). I also have links to the OFFICAL IBM specs on the drives. I mean compare this to 100,000-200,000 hours MTBF for other IDE drives, and over a million for some SCSI ones.

If you ask me, 2 years lifetime on the HDD sucks hard. I have computers running that are freaking 5 or 7 years old, heck I still use my 486 as a router for my DSL setup. I have 2 IBM 75gxp drives, they occasionally make weird noises, but they are in a raid mirror setup so I'm not too worried, but I know that I will NOT buy IBM drives any more unless they fix this.

Here is a good article explaining the problems with the IBM drives. Mine hasn't crapped out, but I wouldn't buy another. My personal favorite drives are Seagates or the Western Digital Special Edition drives.

<< I Posted above, butt
I PERSONALLY manage only about 30 computers.
I had gone to IBM for QUIET and RELIABLE drives (cost was slightly more). I was dismayed to find out their reliability dropped in the last few years, and now they (IBM) are saying "don't run 24/7" "only 333 hours/month".
That's like buying a freakin car and being told "don't drive for more than 8 hours".
PLUS - THE DAMN 333 NUMBER!!
That looks like some dumbo thought there was 1,000 hours/month and divided by 3!!!

Of course there's only 1000 hours in a month, cause AOL said so! 😛

PS. If AOL gives you 1000 hours free during a one-month period, will have have to include a disclaimer if your system has an IBM HD, and state that they won't be responsible for your HD dying if you exceed the mfg's rated POH-per-month in the process of using their service? If they don't put a disclaimer, can you sue them if your HD does die? Can IBM sue them if they *do* put a disclaimer?

with all the news floating around the net, and from personal experience... this is one of the hdd that need to stay away from. i had 4 of these drives in a raid-0 setup, and it only last me a little over 5 months... i think it's better off getting a WD, or Maxtor for your safety.

I've sent back 5 total. 2 gxp 75's and 3 gxp 60's. Yes they are fast for a while. The Maxtor d740's 7200's are faster and cheaper. Save your money and time!!!!!!!AND DATA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I too recommend EVERYONE steer clear of these drives..

I currently own two 45 Gig 75GXP's.. buying the first one, I had to RMA the drives twice to get a functional drive, doesn't say much for their durability.. buying the second one I got a good one the first time but I heard the click of death (scratching) after only a week of usage though for some reason it didn't die, I just scanned the disk and relocated the data.. either way after reading about everyone else's experiences too it's enough to convince me that IBM is suck.. I've always trusted them in the past but they've lost any and all good reputation in my mind.. Buy a freakin Seagate Barracuda (indestructable) or WD..

Also I've always had my drives hooked to coolers so even that doesn't prevent scary things from happening.. just don't buy one!

i've had 3 60gxp 60gb for 6 months, no problems. In fact the only hd I've had fail is a Maxtor 13gb under warranty and they WOULD NOT replace it!

Ya'll can hear your hd over the sound of the fans? You are just not OC'ing enought! 😉

I RMA'd one of my 75GXP's (same grinding/screeching sound everyone's been reporting) and then Fleabay'd it as soon as I got it back. Actually, I think they just tested it and sent me back the same drive - it had the same serial number. When I saw that I didn't even bother testing it - I just left all the IBM certified stickers on it and listed it. I almost feel bad for doing that to someone.

IBM has been having so many returns on their drives that they will not send out replacement drives any more. So if your drive dies, you are out of a useable drive for a couple of weeks.

Plus in order to return the drive you have to order "IBM approved" packaging which is only available online and costs a premium. On top of that, they charged me like $6 to ship me the box with some foam inside.

I used to work at IBM Global Services and I'm glad I'm not there now. I'm sure I would be getting earfuls every day if I had to tell customers that this was the only way to replace their hard drive.
