nice deal, however this is not a dual format drive. It will not do DVD -r or DVD -rw.

Well, these folks claim it could be flashed to support both "+-" They have a firmware patch and a usual disclaimer "Lite-On/mediatek have only paid + format licensing fees for this writer so it should not be upgraded to also support the - format. This is somewhat illegal and both Lite-On/mediatek may get in problems if we convert our drives."
I have not tried it yet--still waiting for black faceplate version ...

Edit: grifterspawn noticed the link is dead  I hit "refresh" -- it sure is :disgust:

I've got the file(s) saved, if anybody wants to host, please PM me.

I have two of these Lite-on lwd-401s. I bought one for $144 about 2 months ago and one just recently for $109. You can get the OEMs for $104 from newegg. So yes $97 is a great deal. Yes it's only DVD+R but that's where it's going. I burned well over 300 DVD-Rs and never will do again on my sony dual burner.

Look again, that isn't what he said. He is talking about burning DVD-R disks on his "sony dual burner". The drive in question here is a LiteOn. And, for what it's worth, I agree with MrBass -- I now only purchase DVD+R disks for my Sony DRU500A dual format burner.

Nice price, but its oos.

I've got a question about dvd R (+/-) media. Can anyone give their experiences on one format over the other. I have somehow been lead to think dvd-r is better, but can anyone give me some solid info? Thanks :)

My 30$ apex plays +r's fine and so does my cyberhome. Its true that - r are supposedly more compatable based on user reviews on vcdhelp. But I think this whole issue isnt that important as its easy to buy a cheap dvd player now a days that plays your media. Progressive scan dvd players from big names like toshiba, sony, jvc and panasonic have dropped in to 60-75 $ mark . Its very easy to find a player that works with the media. I personally prefer +r as it offers better defect management and usually better companies make them. All my memorex + r s are made by ricoh, japan where as my memorex -r was made by cmc and burn only at 2x reliably.

I placed an order last night. I have been waiting for a DVD burner that will be able to burn CDs at 40X. 24X CDRW bonus is just a sweet bonus. Plus, you really can't get much better drive than LiteOn.

As far as not being able to burn -R discs, +R discs have dropped in price and are better quality than -R and (I think) supposed to last longer too.

yes ..probably cheapest price now is amazon for Memorex 4X DVD+R for $29.99 for a 25 pack. free s/h + no tax. Also bestbuy has them for the same price.

No I haven't done that firmware hack to be a dual format burner..don't plan to either as I don't paticularly want to burn dvd-r ever again. I know of one friend whose xbox only reads DVD-R for backup games although mine and a few other friends xbox's read DVD+Rs just fine.

Test I have seen have said that DVD+ is better for DVD home video. Based on that fact I would say that DVD+ is becoming more popular due to the normal person would use it for Home Vid, DVD copy, and general storage. The Plus does all that very well, where the Minus dosen't.

It is good to know the xbox is -r. Our livingroom setup is centered around our xbox, so it looks like I might be going to a dual format burner in the future.

Any comments still welcome!
