The 10% off is not supposed to be applicable to the X5 basic but if you follow the link to the $269 X5 and customize it, you get the option to select the 300 MHz and it still keeps the discount. Also make sure to select the travel sync and not the cradle to save an extra $20. I ordered one and it already shipped so no problems. Couldn't find a stackable code to make the deal better. Hope this is warm for some people. I like the CF memory option to use existing memory I have so not to spend more money and it now comes with a decent case (rumor has it).

I've got an X5 400MHz Axim. This thing rocks. I've also got the Pharos GPS compact flash on it.
Look at the referb products at the Dell site. They come w/ the same warranty as a new unit, just less money.

I agree that it rocks. I've had an Axim X5 400MHz for nearly a year now. With a cheapo D-link Wifi CF card and 256MB SD it's been very versatile.

The good thing about the X5 models is that they come standard with 1440mAH batteries, the largest standard size battery in any PDA. In battery rundown tests, it usually gets around 8-9 hours of use.

Don't be fooled when you read of other PDAs getting something like "2 weeks" on a battery charge. When you see those figures quoted by Sony and Palm it's with the assumption of 30 minutes of use per day. So "2 weeks" is really just 7 hours of active battery life.

Got one of these earlier this year for the wife. A little larger than some PDA's but not bad at all. Works fine. There is one "catch" to it though. There is a severe problem with many SD memory cards of the 256MB size. Dell has denied any responsibility on their forums and to their customers. Sandisk has readily replaced their SD cards for those that have failed in an Axim (kudos to them) but the problem is not limited to Sandisk. Also, many of the replacement cards that Sandisk sent out have failed too. In fairness, there are similar problems reported in a couple of other PDA brands. However, at least one issued a patch that seemed to fix the issue. Dell has issued no fix and there are continuing failures. There is one user that has done extensive research on the problem and even devoted a website to it. You can find it here.
On the bright side, SimpleTech SD cards seem to work fine and there is little or no reports of failure with CF cards. Again and in spite of the problems, this is still (IMHO) an excellent PDA. If you can indeed get it for this price, you will be getting one heck of a deal and I would encourage you to do so. Just make sure that if you use an SD card with it that it is listed on the website I linked to or is a SimpleTech.

Haven't tried that with it. She just uses it for games, organization, pics, etc. However, I know from hanging out at the Dell Axim users forum that a great many peeps do use wireless CF cards in it with great success. You should have no problem there. It does not have wireless built in; you need to use a CF card add-on. Hope that helps.

I've also got an X5. My only complaint? It's a brick.

It also does pretty well with web surfing, wherever you get connected. It's a very cool device. I think the IPAQ's are just as powerful, and probably less than half of the weight of the X5, just in case you're concerned about bulk.

well you can either have the IE for pocketpc adjust to fit on your screen or make it original size and do a lot of scrolling--- viewing homepages will be exactly like you do on a desktop IE... its not too bad but i dont do it often - its better to use the pocket AIM or MSN and chat..haha

The iPAQs are 0.5" shorter, 0.2" less wide, 0.1" thinner and about 1.8oz lighter than the X5s. Not exactly a "brick".

x5 (400mhz) has a longer battery life and BOTH compact flash and secure digital expansion

x3i (400mhz) has a smaller battery so it doesnt last up to like 9-10 hours like the x5 and does not have the compact flash expansion --- its smaller, a tad faster, and has a built in wireless connection though---

i like the x5 because of the compact flash- meaning, CF GPS card, CF Wireless Card, Cheap CF memory, CF Digital Camera, CF Radio---

Agree. Not sure about your representation of the battery life of the X3i (I think it is within reason) but do want to add that they offer an "extended life" battery for the new system. It adds to the up time but also to the bulk of the unit as it is slightly thicker than the "regular" battery.
I think the dual support of memory is something all should consider also. The X5 supports/has slots for both CF and SD. A damned convenient option. The X3i only supports SD memory. With the X5 you can use both at the same time, meaning you could have a CF wireless adaptor installed and download files to your SD card. Pretty nice! Just got to watch what SD card you are using. I don't want to understate or overstate the problem but there is a problem with SD cards of certain types and sizes that still exists and has not been sufficiently dealt with by Dell and/or the SD card makers (for the most part).

with the SD issue- its always safer to get a SD made in JAPAN-- the majority of the Taiwan ones are the main cause for problems -

stay away from sandisk too--- most theirs are taiwan

I have a PNY 256 i got for 50 bucks AR from Staples a while back and it works great---
