Uh, I don't want to be mean or anything, but this isn't even a warm deal. Circuit City has the same TV for the same price. And we all know how cheap Circuit City can be...

Well most of us are looking for "FREE" ... probably why this isn't even a warm deal.

Sony TV's are price controlled, which is why that price doesn't "look" like a sale. Stores cannot advertise items (and sometimes can't even SELL items) below the MSRP.

Your best bet to to find stores that aren't advertising the prices on Sony equipment. Locally (Wa.) we have a store called "Video Only" that has great prices on Sony equipment. Shop around, and don't pay retail.

Oh, and to explain the drop of the 27" to $599.99 ... Sony themselves dropped the price. Some stores are just taking longer to catch up. Sony's not selling enough TV's with HDTV on the radar screen ... especially here in the PNW. (We have 4 networks broadcasting HDTV.)

That's no exactly true. This isn't a price drop...this is a new tv...and all the stores have caught up. At least in that last 2 weeks they have. For a while, by Best Buy, Sears, Montgomery Ward's, Circuit City, and ABC Warehouse have had this tv for that price...that price is retail...and for the next model up it is 699. The diff is that the KV-27FS12 (599) has no PiP...and the KV-27FS16 (699) has 2 tuner PiP. These are outstanding deals and great TVs. Last years 27" TVs were about 300 more and they didn't have Component Video...these ones do. These TVs also have Anamorphic Squeeze (16:9 Enhanced Feature)...which allows you to play anamorphic DVDs w/up to 33% more lines of resolution. It is a great buy, and I highly suggest it!

SuperRob: Sony TV's are not price-controlled. I work at ABC Warehouse (appliance/electronics chain in Michigan/Ohio/Indiana), and we can sell Sony TV's, including WEGA models for whatever we want, even at cost. And believe me, the mark-up on them is huge.

so what does this tv give me when i hook up my component video from my dvd player? HDTV resolution? is it wide? (16:9)? im looking for a great teevee about 27-33" any suggestions, would prefer super-hi-res (svga) and $600 seems like a good price range.

Remember that lots of A/V places will "deal" with you on the price on the showroom floor (dunno about CC tho, never tried there).

The best "deal" i've done has been at J&R in NYC. The sales people there will deal with you.

Circuit City will not "deal" with you. The prices shown are the lowest price, but they do have a very aggressive low price guarantee - if you can prove that an authorized dealer is selling it for a lower price (which can be through the phone or bring in their price tag) they'll beat the price by 110%. Most stores that "deal" with you (especially PC Richards in the NYC/LI area) actually start at higher prices and will not usually go below the prices you'd pay at a store like Circuit City or Best Buy (Best Buy actually shops those stores and finds out the lowest price they'll go and then adjusts their prices accordingly). It is a very nice TV though, and if you guys are correct in saying the markup is good, I might have to use my employee discount and buy one at cost.

rigor, if you just wait for a deal to come along, it will. I just 5 minutes ago dragged in a 178 pound boxed Toshiba cz36v61 (36") from Sam's Club for $700.02 (damaged box=price cut). Not a Hot Deal, but ok for component inputs and 850 lines, etc.

The Sony WEGA TV is awesome. It's quality is execptional, and its a good buy. I personally own the 36" one and with my dvd player and 5 speaker BOSE, Acustimaster-10 and another 12" sub, it makes home theater experience very nice. Resolution is great, so get this TV if you want a high quality, affordable, TV. I'm not trying to advertise this, but jsut giving my comments on it.

When I said price controlled, Knocks, I qualified it by mentioning that they can't ADVERTISE the price below a set rate. I'm sure that your store doesn't advertise your Sony prices.

Have you noticed how you can rarely find a Sony price online that is anything other than retail lately? Sony tightened up their rules.

HarvardGuy is wrong about his point ... I've rarely seen a "discounter" that has a price that starts above retail. They have room to move because they aren't engaging in Sony's advertising programs.

Just clarifying my earlier point.

That should probably stop soon with Sony, if I recall the recent government action against the record companies for the very same practice (retail stores couldn't advertise lower prices than the "suggested" levels). The FTC is breaking their balls over that, and I would imagine that other companies will realize the wisdom in changing that rule quite quickly.

Okay...let me interject. I know quite a bit about the new Wegas, so I can comment on this subject. SuperRob...Authorized Sony retailers can advertise prices. Look at your Best Buy add...also, it isn't hard to find online prices, if you look in the right places. Look at J And R (http://www.jandr.com) ...they are authorized, and look, they have the Wegas advertised. This conversation is dealing with a mix of models of the Wegas including this year and last year's models. This year, Sony is or has already released the KV27FS12, KV27FS16, KV32FS12, KV32FS16, KV32XBR400, KV36XBR400...the XBR ones are HD...but they aren't 16x9. The HD ones are 2000 and 2500. The others range from 600 to 2000 I think. The older models of the Wegas have the speakers on the side, the newer ones have the speakers on the bottom. The newer ones also have component video and anamorphic sqeeze...all for a lot less. These aren't reduced prices, just new models at new prices. And great TVs at that.

Let me say this one more time, so thatI can be absolutely clear.

An authorized Sony retailer cannot advertise prices BELOW the minimum price Sony sets. Period. If there is a price advertised below this minimum, than it is either a price reduction masked as a sale, or it is a Sony-sponsored sale.

There is nothing stopping a retailer from selling a price below the minimum ... they just can't advertise it. If they DO advertise it, they can't use the Sony name or a picture of the product, which is where the "Famous Maker" adverts come from.

Argue with me all you want, but this is the way that it is. J&R is a great example ... they USED to advertise prices lower on the Net, and Sony changed their rules to include the Internet. Go to J&R's site now, and you find nothing but retail prices. Call them, and they'll dicker. Same with Supreme Video. You have to CALL to get a price reduction. Notice how they have the "More Info" flag on EVERY Sony item, telling you to call for updated prices? They don't want to charge you retail, and that's a subtle way for them to tell you that!

The moral of this story is: Don't buy a Sony AV product at retail. You'll get beaten, raped, and left for dead.

Hold up Matt Stone....

You are saying that the FV models with the speakers on the side are the older models? I don't know about that. The FS models with their speakers on the bottom are the older models, and that the FV models are the newer models that have much better sound because of the more separated space between the speakers make for a better "surround sound" effect.

If you get a chance to compare the two, the FS models will have black lettering on the front of the unit for the volume/channel buttons where as the FV models will have white lettering. They did this because people complained about the older FS model not being very readable. So they updated it with the FV...

And also that the FV models of the same size screens cost about $50 more than the FS models.

No no...you are wrong. You have to understand that there are multiple FV and FS models. Trust me the older models have speakers on the side...the newer have them on the bottom. The new FS models are out now and the new FV models are on their way. There were FS/FV models out last year too, and they all had speakers on their sides. Don't get all defensive...because I'm right about this one, I've been scouring the net for Wega info. The newer FV models this year will have a 3D Digital Filter, where as the FS models from this year only have a 3 Line Digital Filter. And for the love of god the new ones have the speakers on the bottom...not vice versa...check hometheaterforum.com and alt.home-theater.misc.

And as for the whole advertising Sony prices deal...I though that you were saying that no one can advertise prices...I know that they cannot advertise lower than retail. Take a look at circuit city, last week they had the kv27fs12 for 560, but it wasn't in the ad.
