Warm deal on Philips miniCD MP3 player

Circuit City B&M is closing out the nifty Philips Expanium EXP401 MP3 player, which uses 3" CDs. This is a nice little machine that seems better built than the Compaq PM-1. It is about the size of a cassette Walkman. They retail for $159.95, and are on sale for $99.95.

Weird.. they're closing out these? I've kinda been waiting for these to come out, and I never heard anything about them.

<< How is the skip protection? I see that it's 100 seconds protection. Did you buy this yourself, Don_Vito? >>

It seems pretty good in my shake testing, but I have not yet had a chance to use it while working out. I am having a weird problem with it where the battery seems to go dead even when the player is not in use. I will check the manual when I get home, because each time I try it out at the gym I get an indication that the battery is dead, so I pack it up before hitting the gym. Either there is a power switch I don't know about, or the player is defective - we shall see . . . It worked fine and sounded good in my brief trial, though.

It's a great concept, but I'm waiting for the next generation of Philips mini-CD/MP3 players to come out. The 401 has a terrible battery life -- on the order of 3 hours. Then again, it uses only 1AA battery so you could also look at it as 6 hours for 2AA batteries, which is a little more respectable but still requires you to tote around that extra battery as a backup. The 401 doesn't support WMA, but it does support AAC. And you can't beat the size. I also found the skip technology to be sufficient.

Just a note -- when I first noticed these back in January, they were selling on Amazon for 99.99. Not sure what the price is now.

i think the compaq is better personally. it costs $99 all the time. and it comes with 2 nimh batteries and a charger which has got to be worth at least $10-15. and it runs 8 hours no 2 AA alkalines.
