Considering that sygyzy mentioned the CD stops spinning while playing an MP3, obviously, the player will spin the CD to load the song into memory and stop the motor to conserve battery.

So, I'd assume 15 hours is a conservative estimate by the company depending on wether you skip through songs alot.

Just a thought.

damn I should get one then, the genica I got off easybuy2000.com only last two hours. and that's with my NiMH battery. Oh Duracell or Energizer it only last 1.5 hours. I think I got ripped off, I carry like 6 batteries with me all the time. Thank god for Rechargables.

the best place, i think, to get this if you want it NOW, is outpost.com. just search rio volt. it's 169.99 with free overnight shipping. sure it's not 149 but it's in stock!

last i checked, outpost.com had these in for stock for 169.95, so basically same as rio except free shipping. i'm sure outpost would actually pack the rio volt much better than rio does with it shoved into a smaller fedex box causing a huge bulge. i wouldn't be surprised that the ppl who've had problems with their rio volt are due to it being crammed into a box it shouldn't be mailed out in.

Well, I'm new to the forums here, but since I have a Rio Volt, I decided to post my $0.02 here:

Basically, the unit looks very decent. It feels weel made, not like that MpTrip stuff, that looks like its held together with glue (I have one...I should know).
Anyway, it's not overly big either...since it's round, it makes it smaller. The buttons and d-pad is all very functional, which I like. The only gripe I have about the buttons is that there is no way, as far as I can tell, to skip like 17 tracks for example. You have to skip 20 using the +10, and go back 3, etc.

The illumination on the screen is a very nice blue-green, and it is very legible. It displays track time, track #, filename, battery power, and any modes like shuffle, etc. The letters are nice and big, which is bad in a way because it takes a while for the name to scroll across. Also, you can navigate directories, which is very very cool. Just an observation...once you load up a cd, it reads the FILENAME. Once the track is played, it loads the ID3 from it. So unless the song has played already, browsing through directories can be a bitch because if all the filenames start with ARTIST - TITLE, all you will see is artist initially until it scrolls, which takes like 2 sec. However, if the ID3 tag is read, it will display TITLE - ARTIST, which is what you want if you have multiple tracks from the same artist.

Sound quality is great. The line-out is good too. It may/will have trouble with generic ac adaptors/cigarette adaptors, as my MpTrip did. Batteries are 100% though.

The remote control is very functional too. Its a tad sensitive, so you might turn it on accidentally, thus wasting batteries. Also, theres no +10 skip button on there and no way to skip multiple tracks at once using the remote, which blows...yet they have a useless button for EQ on there. Oh well. Also a bit difficult to press the side buttons too.

Haven't checked out the other stuff it came with. The case, the software, etc. You probably won't use them much though.

The caching is cool too. It reads for 10 sec or so every 80 sec, so its semi-solid state I guess. Haven't made it skip yet.

If you can, buy this unit. It's very good, and firmware upgradeable. Like all things, they will get better in time, but at least this can be updated to keep up with new codecs, etc. I got it for 180, which is worth it in my opinion. Its probably the best unit out there right now and will be for some time I think.

EggHead.com has it in stock for 149.99 (+ 6.95 UPS ground shipping). If you're not in a hurry to get this player, this is a better deal than outpost (a bit cheaper and IN STOCK).
I've checked Outpost and they're still "pre-ordering".

I really doubt any player will have no problems whatsoever. When they put +/-10 on the remote and a scrolling lcd, you'll complain there isn't a nav button or a mode button as well. Then you'll complain that the remote is too big now. I mean it would have to be to support all those buttons. The spring on the remote is extremely weak so now that will be a problem since the weight will drag it off your jacket. Get this player, you'll love it and learn to live with the 'problems' it has.

hmm mine says shipped and i ordered yesterday.. i'm assuming instead of putting out of stock or shipping in 2-3 days, they just changed status to preorder since they don't know when they'll get the next shipment?

well if any of you are unsure of picking up a rio volt, just head over to mp3.com hardware forum. there are plenty of rio volt owners there and practically all the posts are exclusively about the volt ;)

From what I can gather the Rio Volt is actually made by a company called Soul, and you can purchase it from
Easybuy2000 here I also just got off the phone with COmputers4sure and they have 400 in stock right now.

www.gottadeal.com
i placed an order at outpost.com over the weekend when it said "accepting preorders" and got it today, so i wouldn't rely on what they say on the site at any given time.

also, for those who want to order it today, outpost takes flooz and flooz has the "send $50/get $15" promotion going on. i did that 4 times (4 different accounts/CC #'s) and ended up paying $200 for the player AND $90 in flooz left over ($45 in one account, $15 in 3 others). you could also do 3 accounts and just send more than $50 for one of them - your choice. this promotion ends today, if i remember correctly.

Since the Soul is the same as the Rio Volt, I would presume that it can take the firmware upgrades that Sonic Blue posts for the Rio. Is this correct?

Just answered my own question - firmware upgrades work for both. Original manufacturer is iriver (iriver.com)
