Warm: Adelphia 80 hour DVR deal

Adelphia cable will be offering 80 hour DVR's starting march 1. If you have digital cable the cost will be an additonal $4.00 per month. If you just have basic cable it will cost $7.50/month. In my case I have digital cable and it will only cost me $4.00. Just take your old digital cable box to your local office on march 1 and they'll swap it for a DVR box. I was told by my local agent that they only received 250 boxes so it's first come first served.

I know it's not Tivo, but it's not priced as high as Tivo either. I actually considered getting a tivo a year or so ago, but with a digital cable box it would've been a PITA to hook up and wasn't worth the hassle.

And yes in general Adelphia does suck, but in my area it's my only cable option and since I have their broadband (3000/256) I get a decent package deal. (Their broadband is the only reason I haven't switched to DirecTV).

This service from adelphia is already available in my area and I think you may find the fees a little more than what you posted. I inquired in the cost to upgrade my digital box and found the fees for the PVR to be:
Rental for the PVR receiver= 7.95 + a seperate PVR content service fee = 4.95; for a total of 12.90/mos

Much like Tivo, there is a seperate fee for subscription to the actual service; this is the extra 4.95. I dont believe you can use the PVR without the added subscription package.
Since I currently pay 3.50 for rental of a digital box, that was 9.40 more /mos to upgrade from digital to PVR.

Thanks for posting that info. When I made my inquiry yesterday I was only told about the rental difference of $4.00. They did not mention anything about the $4.95 content service fee. They can be pretty sneaky sometimes so I will need to look into it further. Thanks again.

That's the cable companies, always trying to find a way to eff ya.

I called again today and talked to a different rep. She confirmed what davidwiz said. It's $7.50 +$4.95 for non digital subscribers or $4.00+$4.95 for digital customers. So bottom line for me is I'd get a 80hour DVR for an additonal $8.95/month. I guess that still not too bad considering TIVO service is $12.95/month and you are required to buy a unit. I guess I'll try it for a few months and see how I like it.

Coomarlin, what area do you live in? I live in Cleveland and called Adelphia and they told me that it is $4.95 service fee per month for the box, and an introductory 2-month rate of $3.50 per for the actual box, then it increases to $8.95 thereafter. So the total for me would be nearly $14 a month for it. Does Adelphia vary its rates that much between states/cities?

Too add to this, when I called (Cleveland Hts here), the monthly service fee varied based on what package you had.

It was something like
Basic = $10/month
Lower (gold, silver, maybe platinum) = $5/month
"Ultimate package = Free DVR service, only pay the equipment fee.

-Brett.

It may end up varying by area. Who knows with Adelphia. I live in Northern WV about 3 hours from Cleveland. Right now I have a package that includes digital cable with HBO and broadband internet access. I pay around $90/month or something around that. It may be the silver package, but I'm not 100% sure. From what I understand my bill should increase by $8.95. We'll see 🙂

Pgh, Pa... Have digital cable now, but no pay stations. Confirmed my price would be the same $9.40/mo to switch my cable box out for one of these.

There must be price discrepancies. I have the same Digital Cable/HBO/Internet package and pay over $100 a month for it.

So. CA here. No HBO. Digital cable and internet already cost me $108/month.
They said DVR is not available on west coast. It's for east coast only!

I have had this service since December when Adelphia began to offer it here (South Florida). I have a Scientific Atlanta 8000 DVR. It is GREAT!! Two tuners so you can record two programs at once, even watch a recorded show while recording two new programs. The cable box is integrated so no worry about changing channels on external box. Service fee is less than Tivo or Replay and if the device fails Adelphia replaces it no charge.

My machine has 30-40 hour capacity so I am going to see if an 80 hour machine will be available and if so exchange for it. So grab it when offered, it works well and has many advantages over Tivo and Replay.

Just wanted to update everyone one this deal. I went to my local office and picked a unit up yesterday. They are 50 Hour units instead of the quoted 80 hours which I wasn't too happy about. The unit was brand new and still in it's original box. As mentioned above it is a Scientific Atlanta 8000 DVR. I took the unit home and hooked it up. One thing I can tell you now is that it definately is no Tivo. I definately perfer Tivo over the setup of the Adelphia box. The unit does all of the standard record/pause/replay/FF/Rewind that the Tivo does but it also has some major disadvantages. One of which is a delay when you pause live TV. With Tivo you can hit pause and the picture pauses imediately. With the Adelphia unit hitting pause causes the screen to go blank for about 2-3 seconds before pausing the show. Another big drawback is there are no cool search features like with the Tivo units. On my dads Tivo you can type in an Actor such as Jack black and it will list everything that jack will be in within the next 2 weeks. The adelphia unit is much "dumber". You can search shows alphabetically by date, but thats about it.

If it weren't for my Adelphia Broadband I'd switch to DirecTivo in a heartbeat. It's definately a superior product and it actually costs less which is the icing on the cake.

With that said the Adelphia unit is still pretty good. It has two tuners built in so you can record 2 shows at once. It has a PIP function that can be used even by people without PIP TV's. And if the unit ever breaks I just take it to my local office and swap it for a new one.

I also recently read about their upcoming price increases in my area, and that they are adding a $50 one-time "setup fee" for new DVR subscribers.

No matter, I love my Tivo and wouldn't trade it for this box. Besides, I'd rather pay Tivo that money instead of Crap-delphia.
