Warm: *50* minutes with TracFone activation from Radio Shack

I've been looking for a cheap Tracfone for a semi-gag gift, but wanted more than the 10 free minutes you get. Sunday's Radio Shaft, err, Shack, ad showed 50 minutes with all their Tracfones.

Went in-store yesterday and the box says 10minutes, the counter guys says 10 minutes, but even the ad he's got hung up says 50 minutes. Manager calls district manager who says "Activate online and it'll automatically give you the 50 minutes." I buy the Nokia 2285, $50 and leave. Today I tried to activate online and got an error off the ESN. 15-20 minutes with Tracfone phone support gets the ESN fixed in their system so I can activate online, but the phone then comes up with 0.0 units. Another call to Tracfone phone support explaining the Radio Shack offer and my 0.0 balance, got me a new code which gave 20.0 units, and the guy said "I'll just give you the extra 30, I don't know why they didn't come up automatically." One more huge Tracfone code entered and the phone shows 50.0 units.

Long, and a YMMV, but if you're looking for a Tracfone anyway, an extra 40min is a nice freebie.

If you get a referral from someone who has a Tracfone, you'll both get 100 extra free minutes.
It may be too late to get a referral, since you already registered on-line, but it may still be possible.

I am looking for a phone to use in emergency like when i get lost
is tracfone the cheapest way to go? I heard they cost liek 45 cents/min

With Tracfone, airtime cost depends on how many minutes you buy. The 400 minutes card brings it to 20 cents/minute. The 40 minutes card will make it 50 cents/minute.
Further, they have a "double airtime" card for $100, so if you get this and, say, 400 minutes 2 times a year, you pay $100 + (2x $80) = $260 for (2x 400 minutes x 2 (double airtime)) 1600 minutes, or 16.25 cents a minute.
I use TracFone and am pretty happy with it because I don't use my cell phone much and can keep the cost low that way.
