Yeah, these samsungs are the slower throughput/speed that OEMs like Dell use but don't have the stuttering issues, IRC.

You can see how low they are rated on sustained throughput, that probably means they are tuned for very "safe" operation from a user experience point of view. ie, no stuttering.

Yeah I've been using a Samsung MLC drive for months and it works great, no stuttering. These are not high performance drives, though. If you want something to speed up your gaming rig, probably better off grabbing an Intel SSD or OCZ Vertex or Apex. If you just want a decent SSD for a laptop, low noise computer, or something like that, this drive would fit the bill. 🙂

Its pretty hot for Flash that doesn't stutter, primarily for laptops. Just wish they had a 128GB option.

Was the one you had SLC or MLC?

The one I had was MLC.

but it was rated at something like 220mbps. I know that the larger size SSDs have more banks to basically internally raid so maybe that is the reason it was so much faster than this one seeing as it was 4 times the size.

From what I understand the 256GB is using the second gen controller, which is why the speeds are so much higher. It would also explain the deals lately on the older first gen Samsung SLC and MLC drives - OCZ Summit and others will be hitting the market soon.

In case anyone is interested in this drive...

The company I work for sells a ruggedized tablet PC with a 1.2Ghz Core Duo CPU and 2GB of memory. I did some testing with this samsung drive and an Intel 80GB drive. Here are the results:

ATTO Disk Benchmark

HD Tach Benchmark

CrystalDiskMark

pic 1 of the inside of the Samsung Drive

Closeup pic of the controller (definately not J-micron)

I think these are cheap because Samsung just introduced to successor to this drive. It's write specs are about double what this drive is. The interesting thing my vendor told me, is that this drive and the new drive are the same price (but they quoted me ~$168). He also said the old drive will continue in production through 2010.
