I'd have to check the date, but the free everyone join beta is around that time too.

There is no free open beta. You can get in through either Fileplanet or by pre ordering the game. All closed beta people will be automatically allowed into OB

There is no free open beta. You can get in through either Fileplanet or by pre ordering the game. All closed beta people will be automatically allowed into OB

lol, so the open beta is just a not as closed beta. Now that's priceless. Good thing they called it an open beta for the news wires to pick it up that way without the fine print.
 
No such thing as a real open beta anymore. All open beta has and and for a long time long require subscription to Fileplanet, etc.

I have gotten into SWG, EQ2, Vanguard, AOC, LOTRO Beta by paying $7.99 to IGN or FilePlanet

I have the game preordered, but I am not in the open beta (only got into the preview weekend afaik), must be a collectors edition only thing.

When you got your pre-order, did you receive a beta code? It should come with all pre-orders unless they ran out which I heard some stores did. You should have gotten a piece of paper with a pre-order code (actually 2) on it within the pre-order box/email giving you your open beta code and pre-order item code. I got both with my pre-order, and it was non-CE.
 
Well, there goes any chance of me giving this game a shot.

None of these companies are ever going to topple WoW if they can't grow some balls and make a product they have some faith in.

You're automatically in the Open Beta if you pre-ordered and entered your pre-order code to get the Preview Weekend. Check your account status under Account management. It should show Open Beta.

If the product is good enough they will reap rewards from letting people try it out. On the other hand, if they lack confidence they are going to hope to at least make some money from these fileplanet deals and from people paying $50 for a game they may never play past the trial period.

If they think they've got a better product they should let people try it out. The biggest cost would be the extra infrastructure they have to add, but then if they expect the game to be a success they should be increasing that anyway, right?

Toppling the giant is going to require some bold steps, not tentativeness. It's asking a lot of consumers to have faith in a new MMO since most of them are failures.
 
If I remember correctly, blizzard has used open betas in the past as a stress test. Why not do the same thing here?
 
The reason they DONT do like WoW did, is because the WoW beta sucked massively. If you played the preview weekend, it was smooth as silk. Loading the servers with tens of thousands of extra players on the servers just makes lag to shit. Do you think it helps sales to have 10 second loot or fight lag, or constant crashes? From preview weekend performance, I know what I'm buying. It still will stress the servers, just not open the floodgates bad.
 
Just preorder from gamestop and choose the in store pickup option. It costs you nothing and you can cancel if you don't want the game. Thats what I did and got into preview weekend and open beta.

edit- oh and on a side note I ended up with 3 beta keys because gamestop screwed up their keys. First Customer service person I talked to (3 or so days after preordering) told me to go to the store and get an actual box so i did. The next day i got a code in my email. Then 3 days later I got the actual original key in another email. So it took a week for my original code to show up and in the meantime I got 2 other codes from customer service.
 
I played SWG free, LOTRO free, Universe at War free, TR free, HGL free, the latest Quake game free during beta among others.

All of these MMOs will eventually offer free preview play once it's gone live. At this point with such a big boy already established it is somewhat stupid not to have more people that may become paying customers allowed to try it.

i pre-ordered from amazon over the weekend and got nothign so far. luckily Fileplanet is doing the open beta so I got in on that. If I like the open beta, I'll keep the game on pre-order.

Will do when I get back, I was able to login to the game today, but no servers appear. (worked this weekend)
 
I got 3 keys now 🙂.

One for my little brother, one for friend....we all have our own comcast internet connection, which gives us free fileplanet memberships 🙂.

downloading at 4.5MBPS, nice.
 
Odd. I preordered WAR at bestbuy for 10 dollars. Got a open beta code. I guess you can get it free now on fileplanet. Thats a crock of sh|t
