Wardriving

THe reason I ask is because I was using my laptop with wifi downtown & I wasgetting a lot of unprotected networks. It amazes me how so many business can have unprotected wireles networks.

just did it yesterday, maybe it's just seattle, but about half of them had WEP

Within a 5 minute drive from my house there are 22 unprotected networks and 3 with wep or wpa enabled.

What "guys"? Just about anyone who uses AOL has the technical ability to set one up, and they often do.

Milwaukee has about 40 to 45% protected.

if you take their info (credit card, etc) or give them viruses , then its cracking them

Just about every office building I go to nowadays has a WAP that is wide open to the public.

Not to mention the fact that my three neighbors (both sides and across the street) all have them wide open as well.

I leave WEP off because it slows the network down.

That's a thing of the past. Besides, you should be using WPA if your equipment supports it.

To see if they can hack into the network and steal information. The word came from wardialing, where someone would call all numbers in a given prefix to see if they can find a computer system that was connected via modem, then try to hack into the system. Matthew Broderick was wardialing in WarGames.
