I agree that Jordan has dragged his series out way too much. I seriously regret going out and buying my own copy of Crossroads of Twilight. George R. R. Martin is on a whole other level compared to Jordan and Goodkind. And if you like him, Tor publishing just picked up my other favorite author, Steven Erikson (A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series). Honestly, its a toss up between him and Martin for best ongoing fantasy series right now IMHO. Very similar styles but vastly different worlds in the stories (Erikson manages to have a world full of magic but doesn't let it get cheesy). I think his books are going to start being published in the US in 2005 but you can get them pretty easily from amazon.ca or something like that. The first book, Gardens of the Moon, is a tough read but VERY rewarding.

Steven Erikson sounds good. I'd love to read his stuff if it was published here. Don't have a lot of extra cash to buy books, so I go to the library very frequently or visit second-hand bookstores. I still read a bit of fantasy but I've also gotten into historical fiction more in the last few years. Currently reading my way through Stephen R. Lawhead's Celtic Crusades trilogy and waiting for the new J.V. Jones book (A Fortress of Gray Ice) to hit the libraries.

I think that this is what most of the books are like now:

Girl 1: I love Rand!1!!1
Girl 2: I love him too!! He is a cutey pie!1!
Girl 3: No I love him more!!!!!!!!!
Girl 2: But I said he is my cutie pie!
Girl 1: No, I am going to have his babies!
Girl 3: You can't have his babies if he marries me!!
Girl 1: I'll have his babies no matter what!
Girl 2: Oh no, we are arguing. Men are so complicated! We should all marry him!
Guy 1: No way ladies, he's mine now!

Or something like that.

Even though Erikson's books aren't published in the US, I think you can buy them from Amazon.CA ... at least I did. I guess I should start reading that series one of these days.

It was alluded that whenever an Aes Sedai (or a warder...) had sex with someone, the warder/aes sedai would "feel" it too. Now thats pretty kinky.

And George R. R. M is probably the best fantasy author out now. If you want to read something a bit older, i.e. from the 80's, I'd suggest the early Raymond E. Feist books. He's the one who created the Krondor universe, which spawned a few computer games. But it's really just the first 5-6 books which are any good.

Also I'd recommend Guy Gavriel Kay... but his books are a little more "mature", and focus more on characters, and less on action sequences, magic, stuff like that. for that reason some see his books as "boring"...

GRRM on the other hand is totally hardcore. It's as gritty and realistic as the sopranos... (season1/2)

The Warder's Aes Sedai knowing that their Warder is having sex was confirmed in a later book.

I stopped reading Feist a while ago because his stuff has just degraded to the point of recycling plots that aren't even interesting anymore. How many demon kings or evil magicians can there be in Midkemia and how many descendants or third cousins of characters from the original Riftwar Saga can there be? I will say that the original Riftwar Saga is good, as is the Empire trilogy he co-wrote with Janny Wurts.

Guy Gavriel Kay is excellent, although I will agree with your description of his work. I think Tigana was probably his best book yet.

Again, George R.R. Martin rocks. Can't say anything bad about him except that I'm going nuts waiting for A Feast For Crows. :(

Just go to the second book, but if your looking for a good read that doesn't drag on, go for George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" series. I think thats what its called. It's way better than Jordan's books.

I am interested this series for a number of reasons:
A lot of friends of mine seem to have read it
My Father saw him speak, so he read the first book, and loved it and quickly read all of them and really enjoyed them.
I will be going to school next to Robert Jordan's house.

really enjoyed each and every single one? wow! the first 3 or 4 books are really good but then the next ones are all pretty awful. take the latest book, for instance. theres no plot. nothing happens. at all. its possibly the most worthless book i've ever read.

Once Jordan achieved some commercial success, he realized that if he could drag out the plotline as long as possible, he could sell many more books. Voila -- that's what he did. I stopped after 6 or 7 books. The last one was so slow and boring that I barely finished it. I sold them all before I moved here and recouped about $35 of my wasted money.

Yup, the Empire trilogy he co-wrote trumps everything else.

Of all the books he wrote solo, it's really just the first 5-6 which are good, i.e. before he started recycling plots. So basically up until 1994-1995, he's okay. The first 2 "Magician" books with Pug, were of course, the cream of the crop.

Guy Gavriel Kay is excellent, although I will agree with your description of his work. I think Tigana was probably his best book yet.

I am one of those who found Tigana boring (relatively speaking) so I couldn't continue it after I got busy with work and school. I have to wait for my next vacation/trip to start reading it again. Basically a book needs to be as addictive as a GRRM work to distract me from work/school; only when I'm on vacation can I read less intensive stuff. As a result nowadays I don't read ANYTHING.

You mean you did not appreciate Jordan's in depth description of how to get mud stains out of silk?

Ugh, don't even get me started on Sword of Poop. It's a good series if you like incredibly crappy writing (Wizard's First Rule had me cringing constantly at the terrible writing style), not to mention half the series seems to be a blatant rip of WoT:

The Keeper=The Dark One

Stone of Tears=The Seven Seals

Sisters of the Dark=Black Ajah

Collar used to control male magic users=Seanchan a'dam

Blood of the Fold=Whitecloaks

Jordan may be dragging along, but I'd rather read his worst book in the WoT series over the best book in the Sword of Truth series.
Baka Ban Mana = Aiel

The Sword of Truth = Callandor
the headaches = the taint

Jebra = Min
