Warcrow's Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault First Impression!

Ok, its a good thing I love you guys, because lastnight while I was at Best Buy, I picked up MOHPA *just* so I could do a little preview for us (seriously, that the only reason! 😛)

Anyways, let me just say first off that I'm a huge fan of MOH:AA and CoD. I thought both games were incredible. But from the recent previews/reviews of this game, I was pretty skeptical of it. Besides, with HL2 and a billion other great games coming out in Nov/Dec, its kinda tough to even think of buying this game, let along another FPS. But let me just say this, the game is really good. This, of course, subject to change since this is only a first impression type of post. I know alot of you are curious about the game, and just how well it stacks up against its predicessors. So, without further BS here we go:

My system:

MSI K7N2
2800XP
1GB PC2700
6800 Ultra 256MB

All Screenshots are in 1280x1024! I didnt like the huge lose in quality with the smaller screenies!

Screenshot - Here is an example of a character model. I think they're done pretty well, although not the best I've ever seen.

Screenshot - Sarge! Here is a SS of your sarge in bootcamp, the first level module in MOHPA.

Screenshot - Sarge showing you how to wax that ass up! I kid. Sarge going over some first aid in bootcamp.

Screenshot - Loading screen. They're static images that have a soft crossfade in transition to other pictures. I would like to add that the game has some of the best music I've ever heard in a game. Very emotional, saving provate ryan type stuff. The game as a whole laments the whole war that took place in the pacific, while throwing factual information at you about the war with historical dates. I thought this might be annoying, but its actually really well done. I like it. Its not boring at all. They pay homage to the marines (atleast, so far it has, there is probably more in there for the other service branches). But alot of respect is given to them. Nice touch.

Screenshot - This fella is the guy who welcome you to Hawaii and drive you around the base informing you of the different locals. The scenery is busy with people walking about, workers tearing up the ground to install equipment, guys hitting on nurses, and some soliders wrestling in the grass.

Screenshot - OMFG! The japs are here!

Screenshot - Lets GTF outta here!

Screenshot - Another shot of the attacking planes.

Screenshots - Along the way, you will find hurt and injured fellow soldiers. You can pick them up by pressing the "F" key (al la Theif) and carry them off to saftey. I picked one guy up, stopped, dropped him, and went on. I dont know if there was any penalty for leaving him behind. If there was, I didnt notice it. Also, one thing I would like to add is that during the initial attack, I was running out in the open back and forth trying to find cover and follow the guy driving the jeep (after he crashed it - jacka$$). I never once got hit. Not once. I mean, I'm good....but not that good.

Screenshot - You soon hop into a boat and mount (you guessed it), a gun. I'm not sure what kind gun this is, but being that its the firs thing you get to fire in the game, its exciting. I thought this shooting stuff would be a drag from the previews, but I actually had alot of fun (its hard too from the rocking of the boat) and it doesnt alst very long either.

Screenshot - After this ship falls, the sailors (poor guys) spill into the water. Cool water effect. Gotta see it in person, good stuff.

Screenshot - BOOM!

Screenshot - Now that we've fended off the attacking airplanes, its time to get into one of the ships and help rescue some peeps.

Screenshot - Now, this guy wasnt a static model. You could bump into him....so, I'm pretty sure the game utilizes the havok engine. If not Havok, someing very simular.

Screenshot - This poor guy in just knocking away at the window begging for his life. Nothing you can do about it though. 🙁

Screenshot - Once you save some peeps, its time to hop onto one of these baddass guns and take down some more plans. Again, very fun. I usually dont dig this stuff, but it well done and doesnt last very long. GFX were amazing here!

Screenshot - Alot of the story is told via the in-game engine, not pre-rendered stuff.

Screenshot - Next level, on a boat, to an island to surprise attack the japs!

Screenshot - Some of the guys coming along with you, calling you a rookie 😉

Screenshot - One last shot, through the binocs.

Anyways, I havent really gotten far into the game, but I just wanted to let you guys know that so far I'm impressed with it. Its been fun so far and I'm looking foward to digging deeper into the game. Is it better than MOH:AA? What about CoD? Well, I think its too early to tell.......but its going to be close if the game is this good consistantly through.

Hope you guys enjoyed the peek! Cheers!

Nah, they dont borther me. The cost in performance to get the AA and ansio running isnt worth it to me. 🙂

Medal of Honor... not metal From your topic 😛. Was throwing me for a loop while I copied and pasted into Game Rankings to check out reviews.

Doesn't use Quake 3 engine.
EA decided to start fresh with Pacific Assault, so instead of using the Quake III engine that powered Allied Assault and many other first-person shooters, the company wrote a brand-new graphics engine built to take advantage of the latest hardware advances.

lol updated! thnx!

I tried the demo. Running at 1024x768 on a vanilla 6800 made it chug. Had to knock it down to 800x600 for acceptable framerates.

Ridiculous, IMO. I hope they've optimized it a bit since then.

War, I'm a few levels ahead of you....overall its very, very good...I haven't read any of the reviews - I played this at E3 and knew I was going to get it when it came out...and I'm not let down at all..

Yea, I'm surprised how good it is. I've not heard any rumble about this, its kinda expected since everything is coming out this month.

The review or two I read is that it's a good game, but it's got a few issues. One of which is the game is supposedly pretty hard. They said much of it becomes trial and error because it's so difficult. Still, they said it's solid, just nothing revolutionary.

Screens look good. Thanks for posting. I might have to try this one out in a couple weeks.

Can the AI hit the side of a barn with a clip?

It is pretty linear or "on rails", but its not really much of a bother for me. The AI can shoot most deffinitly! They hit and miss, making it seem more realistic. When you hit the Right arrow key and call for cover, or hit the left arrow key and ask them to huddle around you or closer, it works (not perfectly, but really well), it makes you feel like you have much more control over the game and the team.

Let me address the "hardness" of the game. Its hard, yes....but keep in mind that there are skill levels to choose from when you start up a game, AND there is a medic that will heal you 4 times per level. I've not yet ran out of health packs (there are 4) in one level, but I have had to use all 4 of them once.

There was this one time where I was down to my last tick of health and I got ambushed by this jap. He was pretty close so I opened fire on him. Well, I ran out of amo before I could kill him, and he charged me with his bayonet. He Stabbed me throwing me to the ground while one of my guys shot him while screaming my name. I fell to my back , the world went a bit blurry, a bit faded, and I could hear my father or drill seargant yelling at me to get up or to remmeber my training. All of a sudden right before I was about to fade to black (queue Metallica), the medic saved me. He helped me up, and said...wow, I thought you were a gonner.

It was just cool and I recommend this game to everyone.

For some reason using the mouse doesn't feel right. I enabled "smooth mouse" and am playing around with the mouse sensitivity to get it to feel right as for me it turns slower than most FPS titles.

As for the engine..its all new from what I read. No Quake/Unreal stuff. The models are nice enough but I really like the faces and the facial animation. Its very well done.

i played the demo version of this game...i like it, but the engine cannot compare to HL2's engine at all. to me...it feels like the MOH:AA engine w/ more polygons. power to graphics ratio is poor IMO.

I DL and played the demo. I think it was a poor choice to demonstrate the game.

I'm also a fan of the MoH CoD Wolfenstein types of games and I was quite disappointed with this one, the only thing I have good to say about it is that it looks as if they put allot of time and effort into it, this game could have been so much better but in the end they really tried but failed. I'll put it this way, this game is basically a wanabe mixture of FarCry and United Offensive but fails miserably at putting it together.

Talk about a linear and repetitive, I've seen games on a rail but this is ridiculous. Games are supposed to be fun but this thing is so hard even at regular that it makes it more frustrating than fun to play, at time you don't even know why or how you got killed. There's also allot of graphics glitches, what about that shotgun what the heck was that, the original doom had a better shotgun and that was what 15 years ago. The nades are horrible and the detpaks are unusable, one thing that is really bad about MoH is that magic bullet, the spawn could be across the map but he will hit 1/50 of a second after seeing you, you just don't have this in CoD. Another thing I noticed was that if a spawn is hidden behind some jungle bushes he can't get hit, apparently your 30 bullets can't go through a leaf but he can hit you. Your also with a squad and I can have a jap come in and stab me in the back while everyone in my group just looks on and does nothing about it. I'm at the point now where I'm in a plane and have to sink the carrier and this is beyond ridiculous, this is the point where I count my losses and just shelve it. I don't even want to give it away since I want to keep my friends, that's how bad it is.

If you want something fun then go with CoD with United Offensive or Far Cry and skip this one, another game that was fun to play was James Bond Nightfire. Put your cash in those first. The other thing that this game is missing is me.
