Warcraft 3 is Getting Updated

I coulda sworn it had widescreen support about 10 years ago.
Must be getting alzheimers.

Why dont they make a GOD DAMN WARCRAFT FOUR!!!!???????????
 
this is my favorite rts ever, over sc, sc2, and maybe even aoe. I love the population limit. sc2 just takes way too much damn effort and really not fun to play with huge armies imo. war3 strikes perfect balance of micro macro and economy
 
I still prefer WC 2 over all others. I really enjoyed WC 3, but it was just...eh, I don't know. Too different? It seems to have spawned all those stupid MOBA games, too.

I'd rather see a remade WC 2.

I've been saying this for years. When WC3 was first released and all my friends were raving about the game, all I could focus on was how different it looked. They changed so much of the game it didn't even look like a Warcraft game to me anymore. It was all about the heroes and macro. I preferred to get some catapults and a horde of ogres and tear down the enemy base with sheer force.

yep. The maps were smaller and the battles were just less epic. You seemed arbitrarily limited in your base size. Granted, I never gave a turd about PvP/competitive nonsense, which WC3 was really designed for. I liked to turtle up for a while and build a massive city with tunnels of walls and towers, then some fortified outposts to turn all of the map's gold and resources into my gold and resources, then build and build that massive army to finally roll around the map and destroy everything in one go. Can only really do that against AI.

Also, no ships in WC3. They were so awesome in WC2.

basically, I think if you prefer PvP then you will prefer WC3, which I totally understand. It spawned from the popularity of Starcraft (which I never really got into for some reason), and focused on changing the mechanics and offering something to PvP players. It abandoned the PvE model of Warcraft, so I still see WC3 as what killed the entire Warcraft IP. 😀
 
Never did finish 3. Was more of a story telling game the RTS.

Plus I had TA for everything RTS in the new shiny category.
 
I was never a fan of the Upkeep system in WarCraft III. It actively pushed you away from maintaining large armies because while your unit count was higher, you received less resources. That meant your ability to reinforce could be diminished. So, this seemed to go against the nature of the previous Blizzard RTS games. I think that's also an important point in and of itself. Blizzard's RTS games were always a bit simpler in nature, and that's not a bad thing. Their games were never about minute tuning and management -- something you might expect in a Civilization game -- but rather the execution.

I thought the upkeep system was a great dynamic. Made it more thoughtful than just pumping out a ton of units and macro'ing away, wouldn't max out until absolutely ready to attack.

To be fair, a max out and attack strategy would largely get you killed in higher StarCraft tiers as it would simply be far too passive of a play style. However, even with the removal of Upkeep, WarCraft III still had a far smaller limit than StarCraft, which would lead to smaller skirmishes. I do think the idea was to focus WarCraft III on smaller battles, but coming from StarCraft, I just didn't enjoy that change.

Most of competitive Starcraft II is either a timing attack all in or maxing out to attack, hopefully building a bank before you do. Now keep in mind they are attacking and harassing while they build up. The top players can do it all.

The most brilliant aspect of Warcraft 3 was the following. I had many, many games where I made a hero, immediately went to my opponent's base, and then proceeded to have a 10-15 minute battle with absolutely zero break. The fact that every single unit mattered was something completely new to RTS and if you embraced the fact that W3 was a micro, squad based RTS instead of a macro, economy based one then it's probably your favorite game of all time.

I'm not that interested in a remastered W3. I had well over 8,000 ladder games played, and lots more of the custom games. I had the best 4v4 clan for a while, and hosted tons of LAN parties and Friday FFA nights. I could get the crew back together for a weekend or two I'm sure, but there's no chance of reviving anything long term unless a Warcraft 4 comes around.
