warcraft 3 help

I've been playing warcraft 3 online now for a few years. I've always lagged a bit but now it's just to bad for such an old game. My pc is like 6 years old and I plan on a new one very soon. My system meets all the reqs. for the game though and I have cable internet. Can anyone think of a reason why I'm lagging terribly.

Dimension 8200 @ 2.00Ghz
256mb rambus
ATI 128mb radeon 9600 series

i just downloaded new driver for my display so idk if thats going to help or not.

tried lowering your res and working your way up to a nice compromise between res/performance? you gain no viewing area when you go up in res, so you don't have to worry about that strategically

This is likely the problem.

At my last job, my work computer only had 512mb of ram, and it could barely run Microsoft Excel. In 2002 I had to upgrade to 1gb of ram because gaming is basically impossible with only 512mb, and your computer has even less than that. As I'm posting this, Firefox.exe uses 180mb of ram.

need more ram.

Definitely.

When you're playing Warcraft, open up the task manager and see how much RAM just Warcraft is using. It's probably more than your 256MB and is therefore getting into your super-slow paging file. Your total RAM usage is almost certainly more than 256MB. You should try closing unnecessary things running in the background to save on system resources.

Do try to lower the settings though. Put them all at rock bottom and see if that reduces your lag at all.

A stick of 512MB is only about $20 for DDR1... get two and be done with it. 1 Gig of RAM should be plenty for WC3 and most other games.

sounds like lowering your settings and avoiding FFA or 2v2 + games is your only option then! (or buy a new PC for $500 that's twice as fast as that one)
