For an english report, we have to pick a theme and analyze it. I came up with:

Although war is mentally and physically anguishing, it provokes a process of self-discovery in an individual.

I need either plays, poems, essays, journal entries, letters, music, art, films, or short stories to back up this theme. So far I have The Red Badge of Courage and Saving Private Ryan.

Anyone have any other works I could use? Thanx for the help.

Killer Angels by Michael Shaara

The movie Gettysburg is based on the book, if you are too lazy to read it ;)

As said before, All quiet on the Western Front is a really good one. Also maybe, Full Metal Jacket, although I don't know how well it would go along with your theme.

If you're watching saving private ryan, I suggest you take a look at the Thin Red Line and Apocalypse Now.

The Wars by Timothy Findley -- although I personally am not a huge fan of the book.

Edit: Oh, and though it may be none of my business, that's a little vague for an English thesis. "Self-discovery" is such a broad topic that I would venture to guess that more than 50% of English literature deals with such a theme. Tightening up the thesis will help you concentrate on a smaller range of literature, and should result in a more cohesive, compelling, and interesting essay, instead of one that spans a voluminous amount of material that has war and self-discovery as the only link.

Try "A Rumour of War" by Philip Caputo. It's a Vietnam era book...very good read and quite enlightening.
