SYDNEY (AFP) - Santas in Australia's largest city have been told not to use Father Christmas's traditional "ho ho ho" greeting because it may be offensive to women, it was reported Thursday.

Sydney's Santa Clauses have instead been instructed to say "ha ha ha" instead, the Daily Telegraph reported.

One disgruntled Santa told the newspaper a recruitment firm warned him not to use "ho ho ho" because it could frighten children and was too close to "ho", a US slang term for prostitute.

"Gimme a break," said Julie Gale, who runs the campaign against sexualising children called Kids Free 2B Kids.

"We are talking about little kids who do not understand that "ho, ho, ho" has any other connotation and nor should they," she told the Telegraph.

"Leave Santa alone."

A local spokesman for the US-based Westaff recruitment firm said it was "misleading" to say the company had banned Santa's traditional greeting and it was being left up to the discretion of the individual Santa himself.

Next up, renaming garden tools. "Hoe" officially changed to "rake-like thingie".

People should go watch the movie "Fred Claus". Yeah it isnt all that great but the character played by Kevin Spacey is a metaphor for people who want to snuff out Christmas at every turn.

The ho thing is overboard, but having store greeters say Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas is not a religious sortie.

Oh good, because I thought political discourse was getting too smart...but here comes "the war on Christmas" whine-fest to save the day

Who exactly are these imaginary people Bill O'Reilly and friends keep complaining about? They don't seem to exist in the actual universe, so what's the deal?

I'm a Jew for Christmas, it's a great holiday and at this point is totally non-religious. As for there not being any real anti-chrismas folks out there, look again. They're not common, they show up about as often as those people suing to get "god" taken off currency and out of the pledge. I couldn't give a lump of coal.

Hooray for the invented culture war of the malicious secular progressives who want to make your kids gay and murder Jesus.

Whatever sells books I guess, faux outrage is easy to foment.

Oh I could go digup articles from years past of pain in the asses suing dept stores for having the gaul to display christmas. But why bother? A new Christmas season will ensure new articles for all of us to read about.

I suppose a movement to shut people up regarding a holiday also includes shutting us up about the mention of those who wage that campaign. It?s rather clever to claim there?s nothing to see, while stepping on people?s throats over their audacity to enjoy an American holiday.

Yet we will always have the boot print on our throat to remember what you stand for.

I guarantee you this has been debated to death in previous years. I mean if O'Reilly hasn't started his "War On Christmas" bit already he will do so shortly. Talk about manufactured outrage.

Thats a guarantee, its sure to boost that gasbags ratings.

I ponder what Christmas actually has to do with Jesus Christ. It is just another reason to buy people stuff at the store that wont let Santa say HO HO HO. The world is nuts. If they dont say Merry Christmas just shop some place else. It is a free world. Vote with your wallet.

How long has the word HO been been more strongly associated with women

and another thing... the women taking offense to this might have some problems in their closet

See that's the thing though with manufactured outrage. There's a very good chance that nobody has complained at all and yet it will be treated as some sort of liberal attack on baby jesus. The article itself says that the company doesn't care what the santas say.

Apparently actually nothing, Christianity inserted it into a pagan custom as a way to overpower it but though the Christian theme is strong now, it didn't used to be. I've not read much on this, though 🙂

Yep, it's all O'Reilly's fault.

Maybe if your left-wing nutjob friends weren't running around suing Santa Claus and trying to take down every little "religious" display they happen to drive by, this wouldn't be an issue.

You might like your "Holiday" Tree. I'll stick with my Christmas Tree.
