Well Rummy initially wanted to do this with 50k troops because we are obviously superior and the country will welcome us because we are Americans. That sounds like overconfidence to me. The MILITARY knew, but the leaders forced their hand. All of the troops should have been in place and were not, because the politicians said "go". In case you are wondering why many of us old fart cowards from the days of Vietnam are concerned about this is because the politicians are too closely involved. That is what screwed up things then. Of course we had our share of apologists for Lyndon "may he burn in hell" Johnson too.
