Dear lord, read HG Wells sometimes. The man was waaaay ahead of his time.

From what I understand, Spielberg is working off the original story and setting it in modern times. A few things have been changed (no black gas) but it is true to the original otherwise.

Would have been so good to have it set in its original location and time. I.E. Victorian England.

I fear that the modern setting will make it just another independence day. *sigh*

I also wish that they had made the movie set in the original time. Would have loved to see them taking on the war machines with artillery. :D

I loved Minority Report, these guys (Cruise and Spielberg) seem to go well together, Cruise fits his style of directing, but hes just one of the best damn actors alive right now too. Looking forward to this flick, hoping it doesn't turn out to be The Core in sheeps clothing, but I have faith with the main heads.. think I even saw Tim Robbins in the cast, however I hate Dakota Fanning and hope shes impaled by an alien tripod early on.

See the link to the non-Spielberg WotW above. It's set in Victoria England. But it looks MST3000 worthy. :D

I thought Dakota Fanning did well in that series, "Taken" esp. for a young kid

SPOILER!!!!

Story in a nutshell: Aliens invade from Mars, wipe out nearly everything, resist all of our weapons, humanity is about to be defeated, aliens forgot that they are not immune to Earth germs, they die.

Actually, when you think about it, how can a race that has mastered space travel not know about germs???

never read the book.
the martians are large about the size of a bear. Black and shiny like wet leather. They have tentacles, instead of arms and legs, that come from the sides of the face. The mouth is like a fleshy lip. They have 2 large black eyes.

That is from the 1898 story.

It looks like there are TWO different movies:

THE War of the Worlds

Spielberg's War of the Worlds

Haha...I want to see the first one. It looks hilariously bad after seeing the theatrical trailer.
The original is a great movie! I'm really looking for'd to the new one, but I hope it's much better than the typical modern Hollywood action crap.

i saw the trailor when watching longest yard last night (which was alright... i guess) and the parts they chose to depict were like a hg wells set version of Independence Day.

I hope there will be more to it then just big explosions : and some of Tom Cruise's dialogue in the trailor was just laughable. It was episode III quality dialogue :(

You don't judge a penis by its thickness, and neither do you judge a book by the same token. H. G. Wells established some precedents for many concepts current in science fiction. Can you imagine writing a novel like War of the Worlds when there was NOTHING like it before?!

Not that computer games are great sci-fi, but when I played Half Life 2, there were a few points that I felt were borrowed from War of the Worlds. (Bombs containing alien invaders, giant tripod alien machines . . . )

Does the military get knocked out? A nuke should kick the crap out of tripods and thier ships. Ive been reading and they say the martians are really humans and have been here the whole time

READ THE BOOK!

it wouldnt take more than an hour to read the book, or you could watch the movie. in the movie we launch nukes and it doesnt phase them. eventually they just start falling oputta the sky because they dont have immunity to our viruses. which if you havnt read or seen the original stories you'll think this is copied off other movies. you'd be wrong, everyone else copied wells.

This was a book decades before it was a radio play decades before it was a movie decades before it was remade. Sh!t, I didn't even know there WAS a 50's movie, I knew about the book and the radio play.
