Nufandland or Great Pyranise. My buddy has a Great Dane/Mastif mix that isn't too big.

Heh... maybe if you are used to domesticating horses that isn't considered big

:)

Good suggestions. I'm afraid now to get one though. I only have one child and he is 2 years 6 months. He has lived with a cat his whole life and doesn't rough house it too much. He will chase it and stuff like that but he doesn't do anything that will hurt the cat. We have tried to teach him from the beginning to "be easy with jo-jo" and it has seemed to work. I have been looking up most of these dogs and some of them are really cool. I really like the yorkie for size reasons, but they are expensive! My wife like the dachshund, but it gets a little big for me. We'll see what happens. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions.

Chinese Pug, but will probably be over ten pounds. They are very stout and sturdy dogs and not too big. Perhaps the most "people friendly" breed of dogs I have yet to come across. Something that I have notices is that for the most part the smaller the dog is, the more unfriendly the dog is towards kids. I have seen some big ass German shepards who were nothing but gentle with kids and then I have seen some Pommeranian (sp?) who was a mean little turd. Sure there are exceptions to everything.

A good medium dog is a Shetland sheepdog, aka Sheltie. They are not a toy breed but they are also far from being a large dog. My mother has one and my two year old neice loves playing with him, and the dog likes to play with her as well. Very kid friendly.

We love our Border Terrier. Good relatively small, but not too tiny, dog. Small enough to hold comfortably in your lap, but big enough and athletic enough to actually play with and have around other dogs without fear of major injury. Males average 15-20lbs; females slightly smaller. The breed as a whole has a reputation for having a less fiesty temperment than most other small terriers making them good candidates for small kids (I know my parents and grandparents Yorkies while well-behaved, never really took to any of the kids in my family growing up.) They generally don't shed much at all.

The only problem is finding them. They haven't been a victim of overbreeding here in the states like many other breeds have been.

Mini Daschund, about 9-11 lbs fully grown. I have two adults, and the female just had a litter of seven, which are being sold. Great dogs.

get a Malteese. THey are friggin' awesome. Don't shed, hypo-allergenic. Friendly friendly. Love to lay around. But as mentioned, typically smaller dogs can be hurt by rough housing kids. A maltese won't typically bite back, but your kids could hurt the dog. But for their size they are pretty tough.

I grew up with a Sheltie. Very intelligent and kind dogs, and much smaller than a Collie.

Make sure your kids treat your pets well though. One of my little bros used to pull on our dog's ears when we weren't looking, and she REALLY didn't like kids for awhile after that.

I would like to know some breeds to consider that would be good with kids first and not too big (would like to stay under 10 lbs) If any one has a favorite please let me know.

thanks

get a schnoodle (cross between a schnauzer and a poodle).

We have a Maltese shih tzu mix (although she looks almost full maltese). She's a great dog! Very friendly, very playful, and loves kids.

With the exception of Jack Russells (who are big dogs in a small body) any dog less than 20 lbs is a cat.

I've seen shepards, labs, and retrievers just lay there while kids abuse the crap out of the poor things. Little dogs are either going to get injured or aggressive.

Just my take. As always - there are exceptions.

Yeah.

As Excelsior points out. Little dogs don't play well with small children - just like cats.

As a rule, the bigger the dog, the more he will let the little ones tool on him without even blinking.

You've never met a dachshund. One of the most tenacious and intrepid dog breeds I've ever met. Any dog bred to hunt badgers is for sure a dog! Disregard this if I've totally misunderstood your post. :D

Pug gets my vote. The offical motto is "Alot in a little package." I researched small breeds that would make good apartment dogs and this was an excellent match, so if you don't have a yard they are awesome!!
