Wanting a new wrist watch....

Hi all,
It's that time of the year when wife asks what I want for the holidays and I mentioned that I want a new wrist watch.

I'm currently looking at the Seiko Kinetic Chronograph SNL036. Retails is $700, online merchants selling it around $500, cheapest price I found at two sites around $375.

Specifics I'm looking for: (and the watch above satisfies my requirements)
1. genuine sapphire crystal face - I wear them ruggedly even at the office so I need the most scratch resistant face.
2. two-tone bracelet - that way I can even use it as my "daily" watch
3. dark dial/face - personal preference
4. self-powered - I don't like the hassle of battery dying on me and replacing it at the store. I prefer kinetic power over Citizen Ecodrive's light-powered watches.

Any other watches I need to look into with the above features? Thanks.

EDIT: added poll.

I don't know much about watches- I haven't worn one for years- but that is a really nice looking watch! I couldn't justify spending $500 on it though.

Meh, not a big fan of the non-traditional chrono dial, and the gold-tone.

Me neither but this will be a gift so I'm not exactly paying for it "directly."

Boy, to each his own, but neither of those are to my taste at all, and I think they'll look very dated, very quickly. I don't generally like two-tone watches, and the only ones I'd even consider are those that use solid gold, which puts you into the pricing stratosphere. There's nothing that looks more ghetto than faded or rubbed-off gold plating.

I personally prefer mechanical watches to quartz, though YMMV, and I'd look at something like the wonderful Seiko Spirits, or a Hamilton Khaki King II rather than the watches you're looking at. This is obviously a matter of personal preference, though.

EDIT: If you want something a little bling-ier, I like the retro '70s charm of the newest Seiko Spirit line. They are definitely an acquired taste, though.

I'm not a big fan of the styles of the 2 choices. The Contura face seems busy and the other one's pattern makes me think of a cactus or a centipede.

No doubt. Ugly. If youre looking for "bling" go with a rolex/tag/omega/etc knockoff.

Not looking for bling nor fakes but for these 4 requirements
needs to have:
1. sapphire crystal face
2. two-tone gold/ss <----------can be reevaluated since people here don't like this
3. dark dial/face
4. self-powered, preferably kinetic

Do you have any "helpful" suggestions so I can look into brands/models?

What's wrong with this, or this, both of which meet all your requirements, other than the two-tone one, which you are flexible on?

donvito, i think you're the only one who has given actual suggestions so far and i thank you for that.

other comments have been very helpful in pointing out that i should go for the classic look which should be "timeless" (pun intended) fashion-wise and won't look outdated in style.

to give credit I stole that pic from Kelly Rayburn over on PMWF.com (poor mans watch forum)

That one looks nice.

I agree it's a nice watch. But that price point is nearing the range of my Rolex datejust.
I was just looking to see if there is a "no hassle, daily watch" that satisfies the 4 things I was looking for and would have price range less than $1000 as a gift from the wife.

I didn't exactly read the whole thread but what's your price range? Up to $700 or at that $500 mark?

[edit] Also, how about the Bezel? Do you prefer it to be immovable? And it sounds like you want no guilloche, right?
