Automotive parts store like autozone, or pep boys.

They sell all the grit you could possibly need.

You'll need 400 - 700 - 1000 - 1200 - 1500 - 2000

the 1200 and 1500 might be hard to find.

Make sure you go in 1 direction and go slowly. Most people mess up from going in circles or going all over the place. 1 direction allows for a more clean stroke, and flatter base.

Also use some kind of lube as it will make things TONS easier. a little tiny drop of veggie oil on the paper will go a very long way and make things tons easier for you.

Of course on a CPU you'd need to be more careful that you dont get any oil on the chip.
Also it helps to have saved that black protection clip you got off the retail box when you bought your cpu. That allows you to put pressure on the chip without putting too much pressure on the resistors.

I read in the Arctic Silver application guide that oil should never be applied to the heatsink or CPU because the oil will stay in the grooves and prevent efficient heat transfer.

Are you using something special to remove the oil?

Arctic Silver recommended using detergent (not soap!) as a lubricant, BTW.

you need to use some form of lube on the paper otherwise you might skip with sanding.

You'll understand what i mean when you try it. After you lap, you always wipe clean with iso alcohol.
