As you may notice pics.bbzzdd.com has not been updated in quite some time. There was a lot of work done on 4.0 that was due out at the end of 2005 which never made it. Reason being, I am on a really big project at work that requires nearly 100% of my time. When I get home I am too burned out from coding all day to give the pics code the attention it deserves. I am also planning a wedding at the end of the month which is almost another full-time job in itself.

So here's where you can help out. I'd like to get 4.0 completed and functioning by the end of July if possible. I would like to continue to manage the project (as we saw what a disaster was with 3.0 when I didn't) but I really would like a good PHP coder to help out.

The only pay is the knowing you are helping keeping a community staple alive and up to date. It's also a good showcase for your work. The site may be "ad supported" but honestly it only pays for a cup of coffee a week :) The code will remain open-source and there's no plans for subscriptions, etc.

Please PM if you are interested.

BTW: Everyone owes DeviousTrap massive credit for hosting via Telnap and RH71 for moderating this past year.

I'd love to help, but much like you, I'm too tired to do any coding when I get home from work. :

I know php SOMEWHAT but I am by no means an expert, I've only done some php stuff on my own, but i dunno i may be able to help out.

Do you have CVS running on the source or anything?

EDIT: but I mean I'm a comp sci major and workin as a software engineer so it's not like I'm a coding noob heh.

Ditto.

Why upgrade though? bbzzdd is running great right now.

That's a good point. I mean, 3.0 wasn't bad, it just wasn't what people wanted from pics.bbzzdd.com. What people want out of pics.bbzzdd.com is what it is now basically. OK, and it would be nice to be able to view all of a user's pictures. Er.... all of warcrow's pictures.

While I can't help with PHP, I may have a bit of time to continue developing my client.

Perhaps this might be an opportunity to add a proper web service to the code.

I don't know any kind of coding, but is there a reason why you are sticking to PHP? Homerboy mentioned .JSP, maybe you could let him try, or let a couple of people try (and let them know as well), and see what is better? A kind of a competition, but without a reward.

Get my drift?

I'd personally use the PHP version regardless... because it will run on many, many more webservers than JSP, ASP, etc. At least easily, particularly for those in shared hosting environments.

You're welcome to rewrite the whole thing from scratch in a different language if you want to.

As I said, I don't know coding, and that's why I was asking.

Anyways, why isn't something like this stickied?

Motion for sticky.

PHP is the most efficient code to use for this. Since the pages are relatively simple almost all of pics.bzzdd.com is cached by the server and the cache files update when someone changes an aspect of the page. Java is huge resource hog and a pain in the ass to run from the hosting point of view.

Although the idea of recoding it is a possibility, I doubt that many people would be willing to recode the thing from scratch only to have their work discarded if they are not chosen.

Sorry I never responded to the PMs I have been in meetings all day :disgust:

The reasons I want to upgrade:

1) The current pics is really hacked together and difficult to modify
2) It does not use any current standards (horrible HTML and lack of CSS)
3) It's slower than it could be
4) There are features people want I cannot add without hacking them on (user galleries, multiple uploads)
5) There is no admin interface worth a damn
6) It's so Web 1.0

I have interest from GeekDrew and ugh so far. I'll talk to you guys over IM.

I have a 75% written beta with a lot of good stuff. I just need a push to get the other 25% done and out there.

PS: User galleries are already in the beta. Here's RH71 for example.
