Wanted: Cheap car with a top speed of 70 mph

Anything that fits in around there? I think that is the only solution to stop getting speeding tickets next to throwing away my driver's license.

A couple people took a 2CV on the Gumball Rally, they were excited when they hit 70. I think they were the only car that wasn't pulled over when the cops were pulling everyone with stickers on their cars over. The 2CV won the "Spirit of the Gumball" award.

Umm the only state that it is illegal to operate a radar detector is Virginia and Washington D.C.

Perfect solution :

Volvo 240DL.

They are quite reliable, very comfortable, extremely practical, and incredibly safe. Fuel economy is decent. It's not so slow as to endanger yourself, yet it's far from fast. They also have reached a point where depreciation is pretty much flat. You can drive it for a few years, keep it in good working order, and probably sell it for about what you paid.

its price is artificially inflated as it's a symbol of a practical, hip urbanite. with a reputation of being bullet-proof and rumored to be safe, the resale values of the 240 is artificially high.

the 240 may be one of the safest cars of its days, but would be it safer than most modern cars with ABS, airbags and crumble zones?

Not sure, the 240GL I sold for $1500 was in pretty good condition, but rather high mileage (350k+). And I'll attest to it being built like a tank, the first thing I noticed was that the only dent on it was the gas filler door. It was the only car I've seen since my dad's '78 GMC truck that I wouldn't flinch if someone stood on the hood.

Edit:
...the engine bay looked big enough to fit an LS3 comfortably...

Yes. You're aware that the 240 has had crumple zones since the 70's right? In addition, more recent models added ABS and Airbags.

EDIT : Also interesting is that the 240 also introduced an internal roll-cage system to the car. Makes the passenger compartment extremely rigid in a rollover, etc.

early 80's vw diesel like a rabbit. stick shift. 45-50 mpg and top speed around 75-80

I am thinking this or maybe like a Toyota Tercel. The diesel is not as good a deal as it used to be since around here diesel is at least 50 cents more per gallon than premium.

My only concern is safety. I know one of if not the most common way to die is in a car accident and with so much new technology driving those cars seems like a death wish.

yeah I am sick of playing cat and mouse with police though. i had a radar detector and it just made driving even more stressful.

50mpg at $3.79/gallon for diesel is roughly the equivalent of 39mpg at $2.97/gallon for 87 octane. I'm using the current cheapest gas prices in my area for this example.

Yup, the 240 series Volvos were (are) great practical cars.

An alternative is an old VW beetle (the original ones). I believe that the late 60's models had a top speed somewhere around 70.

That really sucks if I owned a diesel car I would be pissed.

Maybe I should take the opposite approach and find a giant truck that is way underpowered instead of a little deathtrap car.

still easy on gas when you do the math. plus the resale is gold for diesel vw's. especially the little rabbit type pickup/caddy, omg.

In a VW Beetle, you wouldn't want to go 70 even if you could.

Or find a Chevy LUV pickup. Around 60-65 MPH they start to sound like they are going to blow up from the short gearing, and there is no tach, so all you have to go by is the ominous deafening drone. Again, you won't feel safe above 70 MPH. They have good A/C for the hot days.
