Question Want to upgrade Tower from 2013 to more current

So, with Win11 my current tower system's CPU is not compatible. I want to look at updating but want to retain as much as I can of the existing system.
The system is used for Audio / Video processing/creation, it acts as a plex server and a few other general tasks. It runs well as is so I'm not looking for a HUGE performance increase.
The current system is close to this:



CPU: Intel Core i7-4770 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($314.99 @ NCIX US)

The question is, while upgrading the CPU to a current GEN with similar or great processing power, what replacements do I need to make?
CPU?
Motherboard?

What can I keep and reuse?

I really do not think there is much of anything worth re-using here. Honestly I would just toss this PC in the closet (running or not still as Plex server is your choice) and just build a new PC for your daily driver.

Alternatively, maybe just park yourself at Windows 10 instead of Windows 11? just an idea

If you make a flash drive created by Rufus using the special by secutiy check bypass you would be able to upgrade the system as si and then take it from there.​

I run a 12700K and the price looks like it dropped $100 since I picked mine up when they launched.

If you build the system in PCP it will tell you what matches and what doesn't. You can reuse the drives if you want but, you can pick up a 1TB NVME under $100 and 2TB for ~$160 that will blow the doors off those SATA drives by 5X or more in speed.

I don't think the bump to RPL though will do much for longevity or performance boost for that matter. It's just an added cost at this point. Reuse whatever you have on hand and repurpose the drives for media storage if you want to clone your OS drive over to the NVME that's a quick process using clonezilla or whatever you want to use. Preferably just do a fresh install and it will perform better.

If all you want to do is upgrade to a newer processor, then get an i3-12100 on a cheap H610 mATX or mITX board, use the default HSF, and get 32GB of DDR4 3200 or 3600. If you want, you can re-use the drives, case, and PSU, although if you can afford it, I would replace your SSDs with something like a 512GB NVME drive just to tidy things up and give you a slight speed boost. Shouldn't cost you more than a few hundred dollars.

Windows 11 will certainly run on that hardware (with some tricks) but it is not supported by Microsoft. That in and of itself is not a big deal, we do a lot of things Microsoft does not like or support. It's whether or not Microsoft will in the future release some update to hobble some feature or functionality when running Windows 11 on unsupported configuration. That remains to be seen...

All of the above support Windows 11 and they will be a decent upgrade over your current CPU.
