I like many of the features of the old windows media player and would like to go back to an older version. I found the one that I want to run at oldversion.com but can't figure out how to uninstall the version that's on my system. Can it be done?

I've tried to install the old version hoping that I could just over ride the new one but with no luck, I get a message telling me that the version on my computer is the most current and that I don't need to install the version that I'm trying to install.
I've gone to add and remove windows components but WMP is not listed there.

Is there any way to get rid of this thing short of uninstalling IE?

thanks

In XP the 2 ways that I know of for uninstalling WMPshite are:

1) Use System Restore and roll back your pc to a time before the install

2)Open RUN and type:

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\WINDOWS\INF\wmp.inf,Uninstall

monzie,
Thanks for your help. I "unistalled" WMP using option 2 (RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\WINDOWS\INF\wmp.inf,Un) and while it DID roll the version on my system back to version 6.4, when I went to upgrade to version 7, I got the message You have the latest version of the Windows Media Player and all its components. No upgrade is available at this time. I have a feeling that there are remnants of version 9 somewhere on the system and because of this XP won't allow me to upgrade.

Got any ideas?

XP has both WMP6.4 (wmp2....amazing how few people know its there) AND WMP8 (wmp default) as standard.....i dont think you can install a version lower than version 8 (xp's default...which is why I think they give you v6.4 as well)....someone else might know more.

Anyway stuff WMP...... and go with MPC or Zplayer or VLC or numerous other excellent media players........what do you want WMP (vers 8 and above) for anyway? its spyware infested resource hogging shite that dislikes non microsoft media?.....calling it crap is doing crap an injustice

monzie,
I record a radio show over the internet (The Jim Rome Show) using the archived audio feed from his site and a program called Total Recorder. Recording the archived version is nice because it cuts out all of the commecials.

The old version of WMP lists each segment of his show in a menu on the right hand side. If the connection in my office craps out (which it often does) I can just go back the segment that I missed and re-record it with out too much trouble and fumbling around.

I know that it's not really a big deal and really not that inconvenient but it's enough of an annoyance that I'd like to revert back to the old version of WMP.

I really hate microsoft sometimes...
