Have you ever been to TX, or are you basing all this on your need to bash what is popular to bash?

Yes I have. I've probably driven more miles in that state than in any other except maybe Montana. And I'd say the same thing about Montana east of Missoula.

Well, of course it sucks if all you do is drive through. That's a boring 10 hrs.

Unless they have millions of acres of evergreens hidden somewhere I'm not changing my mind. It's one ugly state.

Funny you say that:

Exactly where have you been in TX? It's a very diverse state geographically.

Eastern California (the part from Arizona to LA) is the worst area I have ever driven in. Literally a disgusting pile of brown dirt with a few rocks scattered around. Yech.

Texas has some scenery at least. I drive across Texas all the time.

The entire eastern part of the state is evergreens, hence "the Pineywoods." Dozens of National Forests.

There is also of course the basins of Guadalupe National Park and Big Bend National Park, lots of evergreens and above 7000ft elevation.

There is also Lost Maples SNA which is a 200 or 300 acre patch of misplaced Maple/Aspen trees in the hill country. One of the most beautiful SNAs in the US that I've seen.

I guess that's why Penn and Teller chose that drive for their game:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P...er's_Smoke_and_Mirrors
Desert Bus is the best known minigame in the package, and was a featured part of Electronic Gaming Monthly's preview. The objective of the game is to drive a bus from Tucson, Arizona to Las Vegas, Nevada in real time at a maximum speed of 45mph, a feat that would take the player 8 hours of continuous play to complete, as the game cannot be paused.

The bus contains no passengers, and there is no scenery or other cars on the road. The bus veers to the right slightly; as a result, it is impossible to tape down a button to go do something else and have the game end properly. If the bus veers off the road it will stall and be towed back to Tucson, also in real time. If the player makes it to Las Vegas, they will score exactly one point. The player then gets the option to make the return trip to Tucson?for another point (a decision they must make in a few seconds or the game ends). Players may continue to make trips and score points as long as their endurance holds out. Some players who have completed the trip have also noted that, although the scenery never changes, a bug splats on the windscreen about five hours through the first trip, and on the return trip the light does fade, with differences at dusk, and later a pitch black road where the player is guided only with headlights.

Penn says, ?The best part of that I think was an idea that was not mine, not Teller?s, and not Barry Marx, who designed the game with us. It was an idea by Eddie Gorodetsky, one of the producers on ?Two and a Half Men,? really funny guy. I think that Eddie G. is one of the funniest guys in the world"

Sorry about the threadjack, Fuzzy. I hope you get some good BBQ. :p

There is a little hole in the wall place on Highway 3 at NASA Road 1 in Webster called Ryan's Smokehouse that has some awesome BBQ. Get a "chow down" baked potato, only your arteries will regret it. :) Not Galveston, but not far from it.

Dont mess with Texas...........Texas has some crappy places like other places but if you have only driven throught dont judge a book by its cover.

Lots of nice people here.....yall.

lol, actually we do. The east Texas piney woods. It's not hidden you just never made it out east apparantly. It's probably more likes hundreds of millions of acres, too.

edit: beaten to it, twice. Sorry I got really excited because my family has land out there and I LOVE the piney woods.

My wife and I experimented on our own last night and mixed up a nice spicy sweet BBQ that I'm hoping is similar to a Texas BBQ style.

2/3c KC Masterpiece Classic BBQ sauce
1t cayenne pepper
1/2t minced garlic
1 shot Jack Daniels
1 1/2t honey
1t chili powder
1 1/2T brown sugar
1T tomato sauce

We cooked it on 2lbs of boneless skinless chicken breasts in the oven at 350F for 45 minutes then pulled the chicken apart with a fork and baked another 10 minutes. Then we served on buns with a bit of mayo and cheddar cheese.

I have recommendations, but you're going to Amarillo, not Central Texas.

The highways in texas cross some pretty desolate areas with small towns every 10-20 miles or so, most of these will have a bar BQ on the main street, I suggest hitting up one of these you will likely find a gem.

And enjoy the trip! The landscape is somewhat stark this time of year but still beautiful IMO. I40 takes you through some nice geo changes from coastal plains, rolling hills, desert border, and into the unique texas panhandle. If you get a chance head north out of Amarillo up into the panhandle you will think your on the moon:)

I've lived in Texas all my life sans a couple of years, and you have to love nature and diverse geography to truly love this state. If you don't like the serenity and majesty of wide open spaces, then stick to the big cities Houston,Dallas,SanAntonio,Austin,etc...
