I have a computer with a C2D@3Ghz on an Asus mb. (not sure which one).
I just put in a 380w Antec power supply because other one failed.
Monitor is 1920x1200.
Was using the built in graphics because I had no need for gaming before.

What is the best card around $300?
Would I need a new power supply?

Thanks.

gtx460 1gb or 5850 would be the very highest I would go with your power supply and would be a decent match for your cpu. I certainly would not do any significant overclocking though.

If you can wait (or want to wait), AMDs new 6000 series of cards is expected to launch within a month or two. The only thing we know for sure is that its coming before 31.12.10

the 6000 series will probably lead in every segment except maybe price, but they are likely to plug some holes in their pricing list by either dropping a new 6000 series of cards down to the 200$ mark, or by lowering the price on HD5850 which is a better card overall than the two i`ve linked above.

Most Antec PSUs in that range will have about 30A total on the 12v rail, which would be fine for a GTX 460. However, it takes two 6-pin PCI-E connectors...most cards that require two connectors come with a molex converter (this model comes with two), just make sure it's included.

I'd invest in a nice Corsair PSU when you pick up your graphics card. Consistent quality that won't fry your mobo/card like the cheapies can.

none. I called it a turd because of its silly 585 watt rating. its really no better than then Antec 380 the op already has so it would not be an upgrade. when a 585 watt psu has a list price of $29.99 that is a good indicator that it is not coming with high quality internals and most certainly is over rated.

he does not need a $100 750 watt psu for a system that will only pull but about 275 watts even at the wall with a stock gtx460. he is fine at stock speeds but if he wants to upgrade then there are plenty of choices in the 500-600 watt range for much cheaper.

yeah he should wait about 2-3 weeks to see what happens. maybe a 6750 or 6770 could end up being a good option for him even with his stock psu.

^Agreed. A 500 watt quality PS will be plenty unless he was running 5 hdds and sli/cx.

Yea, Antec 380w (probably earthwatts) either has 27 or 28a depending on the version. If you do some reading, people on other forums ran q6600 with 8800gtx on that. So you are fine with 5850 or gtx460, even with some mild overclocking.

Wait a couple weeks for the 6000 though. Prices are already dropping like crazy with the gtx460 for $130 ar at newegg.

42A on 12V is enough for any gpu, even xfire 5850 probably.

I got one of these when they were $15 shipped. Although it runs a cheep system relatively quiet, it does have some drawbacks. For one the 4pin ATX lead is incredibly short. It smelled kind of funny too. Whether or not it goes bad, it's a very low end PSU that shouldn't be considered for a gaming system.

Keeping an old lower power previous generation system alive until you upgrade, sure.

After doing a little more looking around it looks like the Antec might be pushing it. It is the earthwatts model with 17a and 15a on the 12v.

I think I'll buy the one that ther00kie16 linked too. (Thanks)

Then wait a bit and see how the AMD 6000 series looks.

Well, I bought 4 of those "585W" PSUs for different cheap-ass customers and 3 have went bad in a year. These weren't demanding machines either, just regular C2D systems with low-end discreet graphics. Now I only offer Corsair and Antec. If they don't like it they can go elsewhere because I refuse to sell HEC/Logisys type junk.

I think that if you're willing to spend $300 then it's worth to wait 2 more weeks until the hd 6000 series launches. The starting models will probably be faster than both the gtx460 and the hd 5850, but will use less power, and you want that, considering your PSU (Don't get me wrong, the Antec is a quality PSU, it can take some serious punishment, but it's a little low on the wattage)

You won't need a new PSU unless you're planning on putting in lots of HDDs. Get a 5850/460 or wait for 6xxx series.
